it's a bit nutty what people are willing to spend but yeah... $300+ per night in the Bahamas where we stayed but it's a $1M+ waterfront property. the rental thing is different all over here, some areas aren't zoned for it (our lake being an example) and others highly encourage it for the tourista $'ies. I wouldn't rent a place I couldn't manage personally unless I found a trustworthy and responsible property manager. the other thing with renting out your own place (vacation property) is it has to be depersonalized... meaning it's unlikely you can keep/have your own shit there for the most part. the people we rented from in the Bahamas have two rentals and their own home so the maintenance, cleaning and upkeep is their full time jobs in a tropical climate, as an example.
