depending upon your circumstances... spending $30k annually to VRBO/ABNB anywhere in the country or the world for that matter during the winter over 10 years is $300k when once retired... vs buying, paying insurance, property taxes, HOA fees, maintenance, furnishing, etc is really up to the individuals. nice thing about the rental option, you can literally go anywhere and do it vs being locked into the same place every year. granted you are more likely to get ROI on the property but most of us will likely be dead ten years after retiring so unless it's important to leave to your heirs there's a couple ways to look at it. now if you're selling your primary residence where you live when you retire and moving... whole different scenario.
property taxes and insurance aren't getting any cheaper in the southeast, so there's that as well... and way too many f'ng people in the winter
