Fears of return to war as Iran’s military ‘running out of patience’
An Iran analyst warns unrealistic US demands are thwarting chances of a peace deal, and it’s likely the war will soon resume.
“We’ve had this statement from the Iranian military saying it’s running out of patience. I think you may see war before you see the next round of negotiations,” said Foad Izadi, a professor at the University of Tehran.
Iran is willing to make concessions on its nuclear programme as it did in the 2015 agreement with the Obama administration; however, the current government’s demands are unreasonable, said Izadi.
“The Iranian delegation was hoping it could repeat something similar, but the US is asking Iran for things it cannot give,” he told Al Jazeera, citing its missile arsenal that it needs “to defend the country”.
Izadi also questioned the US defence department’s cost estimate of $25bn for its war so far, saying that’s likely far lower than the actual price tag. “It’s probably more; this is a low estimate,” he said
