I stay at Colter campground just outside of Cooke. It’s across the highway from the road that leads to Lulu pass. It’s a big access trail for snowmobilers during the winter. It’s a 3-4 trail….maybe a 5 in some areas. I’ve seen dykes in their Subarus traveling the trail. It’s pretty cool. Old mining trail with a bunch of abandoned steam equipment and buildings from the late 1800 and early 1900’s. It’s as though it was just easier and cheaper for the crews to leave it. Last year there were 7 grizzlies that frequented the campground. Every year I’ve been there I’ve seen a grizzly. 4 years ago I had one rub against the van at night. Folded the mirror in and left mud smeared down the side. About ten years ago some fools stayed in a tent there. Mr Griz came along and dragged all three out of the tent. Killed one and severely injured the other two. The camp host told me that story. I looked it up and couldn’t find any proof. Might have been a story he cooked up. Regardless, I wouldn’t stay in a tent at that campground. I love that area. Unfortunately land at Cooke/Silver Gate has gotten too expensive for mortals.
