With help from the US government, the chinese have a monopoly on "rare earth" minerals needed for EV productions (everything from the magnets, to batteries, semiconductors etc)
The US had the lead for a long time, but we cut off our own dick with environmental regulations and lawsuits. Since the chinese DGAF about the environment, or their people, and the goverment subsidizes industry to dump product on the market below cost, they ran the rest of the world out of business in the 90's and 2000's.
