At least one adviser to President Donald Trump isn't buying his boss's claim that midterm election polling is "fake."
Trump is broadly unpopular among the electorate, and polls show Democrats consistently and comfortably ahead on the generic congressional ballot. And some Republican seats once regarded as solidly GOP are now in play. Republicans are widely expected to lose their narrow House majority and potentially even the Senate.
On Monday, CNN reported that the "mood among Donald Trump's inner circle has soured as GOP candidates openly break with the president."
"It's obviously going to be f***ing rough," a Trump adviser told CNN. The person said the best Republicans can hope for is a repeat of the 2022 midterm in reverse, where Democrats controlled both houses of Congress and only narrowly lost the House while retaining the Senate.
