Trump's tariffs are hitting Michigan households harder than anywhere else, study finds
Michigan-bound imports have racked up an estimated $23 billion in tariffs since President Trump returned to office, a cost equivalent to $5,619 for every household in the state, according to a new analysis.
That is the highest per-household figure in the nation and reflects Michigan’s unusually heavy exposure to tariffs on vehicles, auto parts, metals, and other manufacturing supplies.
The state’s estimated tariff total was the third highest in the country, trailing only California at $63 billion and Texas at $37 billion, according to the National Taxpayers Union Foundation’s State Tariffs Tracker. But because those states have far more households, Michigan ranked first on a per-household basis. Georgia came in second at $4,771 per household, followed by California at $4,552.
Tariffs are paid at the border by U.S. companies importing foreign goods. Those businesses may pass the cost along through higher prices, absorb it through lower profits, reduce wages or investment, or distribute it among customers in other states.
