the trick is... salt the ever living fuck out of the roads, rip up or replace the roads, then salt the ever living fuck out of the roads... etc.
idk what just the annual road salt budget is for WI, MI or MN but that alone must be enormous... just so people can drive 84mph when it's -16F or might snow within the next 21 hours.
not to forget the damage the salt and potholes do to our vehicles

bridges are expensive too btw... here's one in Michigan I frequently go over that's literally falling apart and not being fixed. because I'm an asshole and think you should pay for it I buy all my gas in Wisconsin.
