Florida’s transition from a quintessential political battleground to a firmly Republican stronghold has accelerated following the state’s latest primary results, according to CNN senior data analyst Harry Enten.
During an analysis on CNN, Enten highlighted the Democratic primary victory of Angie Nixon, a Democratic Socialist who defeated the nationally recognized Alexander Vindman in a special U.S. Senate race.
Enten noted that the outcome quickly altered nonpartisan race ratings, shifting the Senate contest from “likely Republican” to “solidly Republican.”
“You know what, I think Republicans in Florida are saying, thank you so much, thank you so much, because that has basically, that nomination has taken that race off the board,” Enten said.
The Senate race reflects a broader, multi-year political transformation across the Sunshine State. While Democrats previously carried the state in the 2008 and 2012 presidential elections and remained competitive through 2016, voter registration numbers have undergone a dramatic reversal.

According to Enten, registered Democrats held a 3-point advantage statewide in 2016. By 2024, Republicans established an 8-point lead, a margin that has now widened to an 11-point advantage.
“It’s no longer a swing state. It’s no longer a purple state. It’s a red state now,” Enten said.
The GOP’s growing advantage extends beyond statewide races to congressional districts. Aided in part by recent redistricting, Republicans could potentially pick up two to three additional U.S. House seats in the upcoming federal elections.
Enten emphasized that Florida’s rightward trajectory carries long-term consequences for national politics due to the state’s growing population and expanding Electoral College clout. Florida held 25 electoral votes in the 1990s and grew to 30 following the 2020 census, with projections estimating it could reach 32 electoral votes by the 2030s.
“If you’re Democrats, you don’t want to be losing ground in Florida, but you’re doing exactly that,” Enten said, describing the latest Senate primary as “just more emblematic of a state that is racing to the right.”
