Sen. Mitch McConnell broke his public silence on his health July 12, saying a fall and a subsequent bout of pneumonia have kept him away from the Senate for about a month.
In a statement to his constituents, the Kentucky Republican said he was "briefly unconscious" after the fall and was admitted to a hospital, where he underwent extensive testing and treatment. McConnell, 84, said he has since moved from the hospital to a rehabilitation center and is continuing physical therapy to "keep regaining my strength."
"My doctors have confirmed that I didn't break any bones or suffer a concussion. I didn't have a heart attack or a stroke. I don't have any tumors or hemorrhages," McConnell said. "But I was briefly unconscious and was taken to the hospital."
The senator acknowledged questions from constituents about his absence and attributed some of his health challenges to the lingering effects of childhood polio.
"Surviving childhood polio meant spending my entire life with mobility challenges," he said. "They haven't exactly gotten easier to manage with age."
