  2. I guess if you think freedom of choice is bad and believe EV's are going to save the planet from million year old planetary cycles like a complete idiot some of those types would think it "isn't good"

  16. Shannon Schroeder A statement from GRTA Club President Steve Hamilton regarding the Big Snow Resort trail loss: "The Gogebic Range Trail Authority is a proud supporter of private property owner’s rights first and foremost. For the past 7 years this motorized trail functioned in beautiful harmony through these two ski hills beloved by all who visited them. While it’s utterly heart breaking for us, we warmly respect Big Snow Resort’s new direction to end motorized tourism on their property. However, we wholly refute Mr. Skinner’s claim of egregious liability and insufficient or no documentation, that is entirely false. Mr. Skinner has asserted that “A trail was built across the resort without a written use agreement or adequate liability plan.” The GRTA has held a liability policy and trail permits (land use agreement) for Big Snow Resort since the inception of the trail. The State of Michigan Department of Natural Resources wouldn’t allow GRTA to operate on their lands if we didn’t have liability coverage in place. It’s the absolute cornerstone of our program – landowner protection! The snowbelt region of the Midwest would not have the proliferation of snowmobile trails in this modern-day litigious society if egregious liability for landowners existed. Landowner protections in Michigan are stout and the snowmobile trail program hasn’t had a claim in 30 years. Currently GRTA requests Snowriver to afford us a timetable for our departure – April 2023 – to find a solution off their property. However, there is currently no known reroute and not for a lack of trying. The MDNR granted $30,000 in 2018 to find a route for Snowmobile Trail 2 and the new Iron Belle Trail through this area. After 4 years the work has turned up no viable options. The only option to connect the ultra-critical snowmobile trail infrastructure was through Big Snow Resort. The fallout to area businesses from an abrupt shutdown will be devastating and everyone must do everything to prevent that from happening. We sincerely wish the circumstances of the trail were different and we were able to simply pick it up and move it. However, local landowner politics and exceptionally dynamic terrain make any solution outside of Big Snow Resort a multi-million dollar project. We look forward to constructive talks with the new ownership to avert a devastating trail shutdown."

  21. You would think differently as a landowner.....guaranteed. It should be my choice to allow public recreation on my land. Iowa and I assume other states have laws in place that stop ED for recreational use because its such a slippery slope and could be used so abusively. Think about if the state came and said you know what we want to make all of your land available for public hunting...is it really yours anymore? I get this is an emotional topic as a sledder but try and look at it from the owners perspective and don't let your opinion of their status influence it. We need to maintain private property rights in this country as much as possible. If they want to use ED then it would require a purchase of the property....not we are forcing you to let us use it.

  23. If the Tesla's weren't pieces of shit our second car would be an EV. Most of our running around is to sporting events, school, etc. Obviously a long distance and towing vehicle we need as well, but the day to day would be perfect with an EV. Of course, the draw on the EV for me has nothing to do with green and everything to do with GO. While I'd miss the gorgeous burble and pops of my V8T, the stealth acceleration and rawness of electric is super fun.

  31. They ran a small batch of them down the assy line in the spring. If they are still screwing with some of the plastics to get better fit and finish who gives a fuck? The plastics industry has been hit hard by the rona.. demand spiked, and the storm in texas put a major crimp on the supply of resins, and other raw materials. IMO why they didn't have engines; somone at textron pulled the plug on the big engine at the last second, they are doing something really cool, and different with them and want to trickle out the details like that to keep/build interest. Or both.

  32. Bummer deal. I know that area well. That is the reroute being used since they lost the old section running the grade through Bessemer. I had talked with Steve after he took his position about trying to get the old trail back. We talked about how this thing couldn't last with the way it ran through the ski resorts and around the Condos. Sledders have been doing plenty of stuff off trail and a lot of tracks were close to those businesses. On a side note - I've never seen tracks going to the ski hills. That reroute has been some sort of open invitation for people to head off trail along the pipeline. The current reroute is not convenient for riding or grooming. It is prone to turning into mud quick with the odd sun exposure and gazillion sharp turns and stop signs. The combination of issues has killed traffic volume. I'm a little surprised that some local businesses wouldn't get more involved. I bet the volume is down more than 70% vs. the old trail. Basically, the Hurley, Ironwood, and Bessemer, overnighters have moved further East. Losing this trail would probably put the final nail in quite a few of those businesses. I ride that area often. I used to ride it a lot more. It was nice to use Ironwood - Wakefield as a good starting point. There were quite a few room and entertainment options. Riding to the U.P. or Wisconsin system was easy. That section of trail has changed our riding and lodging. We drive further in rigs and stay further East. Honestly, I think we've only bought WI permits once since that route was changed. I'm sure there are plenty of riders coming from the WI side that have done the same with MI riding. It would certainly be even worse if they lose the current reroute. There is some strange irony with that trail problem. This pic was taken at one of the ski resorts in 2012. Businesses could partner with the sledding community. Ironwood is still trying with racing. I looked pretty seriously around Wakefield/Bessemer for a property to use as a home base. When they lost the old corridor section, I quit looking in that area. It felt like they were becoming the end of the line in the trail system. Losing this section would truly make it the end of the line.
