You are right. No one has a crystal ball and no one knows when they will die. If we did, retirement planning would be much easier. I plan to live another 30+ years. Barring an accident of some sort there is a very very good chance I will. It’s not a fact that I will collect social security for 20 years. I may not collect a penny from SS. I definitely dont mind paying into the program if it helps others and potentially helps me. I look at SS as a simple fee to help everyone live in a civilized society.

People should be able to opt out if they show a level of fiscal responsibility over a sustained period. The entire system depends on the collective putting money into it so if you let everyone opt out they will whether they’re fiscally responsible or not. I’ll gladly “roll the dice” and take the money to invest as I see fit. If I get to the point where my quality of life sucks I’ll go take a long walk in the woods and if I become a vegetable then take me off the ventilator.
