Riders today take the podium with an obligatory sports drink, but, as Ron Lechien shows here, back in the day it was a good old-fashioned Coleman water jug filled with ice water. This shot is from the 1989 Troy National at Kenworthy's, and if you ever attended the event in mid-July, you know how brutal conditions could be. Located next to the Great Miami River, the low river valley always seemed hotter and more humid than the surrounding Ohio countryside. Lechien won the national that day over fellow Kawasaki rider Jeff Ward (pictured) and Honda's Rick Johnson. We didn't know it at the time, but this would prove to be Lechien's final AMA National victory. (Kit Palmer photo)
