The 180' Charlevoix, Michigan based Coast Guard buoy tender Mesquite ran aground near the Keweenaw Peninsula in Lake Superior. The Mesquite was damaged beyond repair and the following year, was moved to nearby deeper water where it became a SCUBA diving destination. The Mesquite had been built in Duluth, Minnesota in 1942.
