As Sea Levels Rise, the East Coast Is Also Sinking

Of course it is.

CLIMATE SCIENTISTS ALREADY know that the East Coast of the United States could see around a foot of sea-level rise by 2050, which will be catastrophic on its own. But they are just beginning to thoroughly measure a “hidden vulnerability” that will make matters far worse: The coastline is also sinking. It’s a phenomenon known as subsidence, and it’s poised to make the rising ocean all the more dangerous, both for people and coastal ecosystems.

New research published in the journal Nature Communications finds that the Atlantic Coast—home to more than a third of the US population—is dropping by several millimeters per year. In Charleston, South Carolina, and the Chesapeake Bay, it’s up to 5 millimeters (a fifth of an inch). In some areas of Delaware, it’s as much as twice that.

If a foot of water rise is a big problem, you built a house in a stupid place.

Sucks to be you.

We can prove one thing they have not moved the rock after they put the structure around it. Or does anyone have any videos of them moving the rock?   Whaleback Lighthouse in Kittery, Maine has stood in the same spot at the same sea level as it did back in 1880 when it was built for the second time due to storm damage.

It would be extremely easy to build a 5 ft berm along the coast if needed. We forget about cities or entire parts of countries that are currently below sea level.

I wouldn’t miss the east coast for a second.

The cities for sure...but most of the east coast looks like door county WI. Rolling hills old trees and fields.

My wife and I could have sworn we were in PA when there (other than the giant lake)

I use to get starfish as a kid on the rocks in Kennebunk at low tide and ya know what 30+ years later I’m now taking my kids on those same rocks in the same spots I use to go shouldn’t they be well under water by now 😂

Straight up fake news.. The Trumpkins know this and are way smarter then any scientist. Obviously.. :saluting:

Some scientists have been bought to follow an agenda. Lots of money being made from climate change. Take that away and climate change will disappear as well.

Spot on but dorks like jonlaphony1 are gut hooked by the GW bullshit. Plenty of scientists out there who refute it also but nobody listens to them. Lots of money being extorted via GW.

Fully support that at the expense of the states or better yet property owners.

What does New Orleans do to keep the sea from flooding the city?  I guess they've learned to adapt...

It's actually a very intricate system.
