One of the worst facial cuts in NHL history occurred to Hall of Fame Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Borje Salming.

In 1986, Salming’s face was badly cut by a skate-blade, during a fight, from Detroit’s Red Wings' Gerard Gallant.

It took nearly 250 stitches to close the wound. The exact tally has never been established since much of the work was done from the inside out and the plastic surgeon was too busy sewing to count.

After, Salming decided to wear a visor and a return to the lineup just two weeks later.
