The George Floyd memorial is an "autonomous zone" with several blocks controlled by activists. Police don't even go in.

Recommended Posts

Been this way since last summer.  Snow plows were not allowed in.  Police, fire, paramedics, all not allowed in.  A local TV station interviewed an auto repair business last fall, they had to sneak in a back alley, rush their TV truck into the garage, and close the door behind them.  Then, turn the truck around inside the garage, so when they left they can speed out the back alley before the people "in charge" caught wind of their presence.

There was a murder in there last week, and the "residents" of the area drug the guy to the barricades and dropped him at the feet of the police, who were not allowed in.

I read a story of one business owner, who renovated a building in the last 3-5 years, with 6 businesses, and 3 apartments, had them all filled and flourishing.  Now only one business is left struggling, and the guy gets ZERO help from the city.  Losing everything.

Just goes to show how useless the mayor and the city council are.

Just as Mag6240 stated, been that way since the mess started.

Sadly, anyone within has no choice.  People live there.  Some good hardworking people are losing everything.  The actual zone is quite small, but it has a rollover effect to nearby homes and businesses.

They should call it a protest/memorial zone.  Nobody is really running things.  There are enough activists sitting around to "stop" outsiders from entering, but they don't enforce anything but borders.

They came close to shutting it down, but the weather was too dang nice this winter.  Nothing will happen until well after the trial now.

I say leave them be.  All calls to 911 should be forwarded to whatever "leader" they want to handle it internally.

The problem is that people who want nothing to to with the "protesters" have homes and businesses within the blockaded area. I mean, it's hard to even call this a protest, it's shenanigans really.

At least it’s localized. Unlike the rape of the entire country during the mortgage backed securities collapse of 2008. Now that one took down a lot of business. But then again, that was white collar criminals.

Following the collapse of the entire area, developers will buy it up and it’ll be the next Harlem. $2k month, 1 bedroom apartments. Wait for it.

There is some irony to that speculation.  It is a prime area.  Lakes, parks, and proximity to the stuff city people want.  The area is central between the two down towns and you don't have to live in scrapers.  There is also a bunch of cool old housing stock in the area.  These "protesters" don't realize what they are doing to the future affordability of a good location.  Fancy new buildings will replace the destroyed and devalued junk properties.  The city has been trying to push 4d housing, but it will only be appealing short term for the region.  Owners will use the program to carry them through this crap and cash out. In the end, it is a windfall for the city.  The mess will be cleaned up and big money will move in to replace the riff raff.  These type of protests essentially accelerate the process.
