Yeah, they must hear EVERYTHING under the surface.  Crazy... but good to know they are trying to find nefarious suspects.

Agreed. The US navy has listening devices everywhere. They also know the signature of underwater sounds.

The Navy has already acknowledged they heard the implosion.

Not sure it was dumb idea but it certainly needed more testing.

Metals can take some stress and flexing without weakening. Carbon fibre can’t. If it flexes at all it severely weakens and shatters.

Never worked with structural carbon fiber but it looks like ultrasound is one of the checks to be used to check the integrity of it.  Wonder if it was checked and if they did find some areas if it was checked after each dive?  Or did they have other test for structural integrity?

Just looking at some videos of how this was manufactured the titanium retaining rings for the titanium end caps were bonded to the outside of the carbon fiber center section.  To structurely support the carbon fiber center they could have been piloted on the inside of the carbon fiber center section.  This would have supported the  center section at the bonding point.  Piloting on the outside enabled the carbon fiber center section to collapse inward of the retaining rings.  With that did the carbon fiber structure fail or the bonding method?

Oh boy this is brings bad memories of failure analysis reports I use to have to write. :smack:

Piloting inside or out, they didn't have a lot of engagement.  2" max?  Another forum I'm on pointed out it should have been a minimum 1/1 ratio, so 5" of engagement is what it should have had.

The Russians send down two submersibles when exploring the titanic. Both have detachable titanium spheres for the crew compartment in case something goes sideways.

They throw them off roof tops to see if they can fly.

Well when you have 100% failure rate normally you figure out the alternative.

A little addition for those that are wondering what may have happened... Doesn't sound like there are too many remains left

Tried telling this to people… there’s nothing to recover. The bodies will be squished into oblivion
