the POS'S would go wonky and you would cram a pack of paper matches under the tape and hope for a better outcome. was the head not contacting the tape very good. new, old decks. new, old tapes, didnt matter. luck of the draw. they were a vile machine

Ah ok, similar to us in the early 80's blowing the dust out of the cartridges for our video games hoping they'd work better again. I do remember that adaptor being finicky now that you mention it

I thought I was big time with the 13 “ black white in my room.  I think we only had 20 “ in family room. :sad:

I had one of those in my first pickup, a '77 Chevy. 

I used one of those tape deck to CD player converters in the tape to 8 track converters to play CDs 🤣
