The attack took place on Main Street in downtown Waukesha last November

A jury in Wisconsin has convicted a man for killing six people and injuring dozens more after he drove through a Christmas parade last year.

Prosecutors argued he had been filled with rage and his actions had shown "utter disregard for human life".

The 40-year-old attacker represented himself in the trial, repeatedly interrupting the judge and derailing court proceedings.

He now faces multiple mandatory life sentences.

School bands and a dance troupe of Wisconsin grandmothers were among those marching in the city of Waukesha on 21 November when the attacker sped down the road in his red SUV.

Those killed were Virginia Sorensen, 79; LeAnna Owen, 71; Tamara Durand, 52; Jane Kulich, 52; Wilhelm Hospel, 81; and eight-year-old Jackson Sparks. More than 60 others were injured.

The driver, Darrell Brooks, a native of nearby Milwaukee, was said to have been fleeing a domestic incident with his ex-girlfriend. He faced 77 charges:

  • six counts of first-degree intentional homicide

  • six counts of hit-and-run causing death

  • 61 counts of recklessly endangering safety

  • two counts of bail jumping

  • one count of misdemeanour battery

As the 12-person jury's verdict was read on Wednesday, he sat motionless with his head in his hands.

"Your actions are that of a murderer," lead prosecutor Sue Opper said during closing arguments on Tuesday. "When you ride through a parade route and roll over children... your intent is known."

Ms Opper told the court that the attacker "never stopped" driving despite the police officers and barricades in his way, before later attempting to "change his appearance" and "get the hell out of town as fast as he could before the cops came".

"This was an intentional act... and an act of utter disregard for human life," she said.

Initially pleading not guilty on grounds of mental illness, the attacker later withdrew the plea without explanation.

Days before the trial, he also dismissed his public defenders and chose to represent himself. He declared himself a so-called "sovereign citizen", adherents of a fringe movement who believe they are not under the jurisdiction of the government and are exempt from US law.

In court, the defendant claimed not to recognise his own name, objected to prosecutors' questions and repeatedly heckled Judge Jennifer Dorow, forcing her on more than one occasion to move him to an adjacent courtroom where he could follow the proceedings via a muted Zoom call.

"This case has demonstrated that a stubbornly defiant defendant can forfeit even important constitutional rights by conduct," the judge said on Tuesday.

Weeping through his closing statement, the suspect claimed he was "speaking from the heart" and had not intentionally mowed down parade-goers.

"My conscience is clear," he told jurors. "Whatever you decide, make sure you can live with it."

Let's all remember that the perpetrator Darrell Brooks was a criminal out on bail during this.  And it led to a formal complaint filed against the DA John Chisholm, that our dear governor Evers hasn't really done anything about yet.  More democrats that are lenient on crime and the elected officials should be held accountable.

https://www.fox6now.com/news/darrell-brooks-trial-why-he-was-free-bail-before-parade

WAUKESHA, Wis. - Darrell Brooks' involvement in the criminal justice system began long before the Waukesha Christmas parade attack in November 2021. At the time he's alleged to have driven his SUV through the parade, killing six and injuring more than 60, he had two open cases in Milwaukee County. In fact, just days before the parade tragedy, Brooks was released in Milwaukee County on $1,000 bond.

In July 2020, Brooks was charged with three felonies including second-degree recklessly endangering safety after prosecutors say he shot at his nephew during a fight.

In that 2020 case, cash bond was set at $10,000 in July 2020, online court records show, but "adjusted down" to $7,500 in August 2020. In February 2021, nine months before the Christmas parade attack, it was "adjusted down" again to $500. That $500 cash bond was posted in May 2021.

.

.

.

Governor Tony Evers said he would take the complaint seriously.

Wisconsin state law allows the governor to oust a district attorney for cause, but it requires a verified complaint filed by a taxpayer of the jurisdiction, which then starts a process. That document was handed over to the governor, asking Evers to remove Chisholm from office.

In January, an attorney hired by the governor's administration concluded the complaint demanding Evers remove Chisnholms was not valid.

The complaint from a group of Milwaukee County taxpayers had a host of technical shortcomings, attorney Matthew Fleming wrote in a memo to Evers. Nothing indicates the group swore oaths that they believe their statements were true, notary verifications were incomplete and the group failed to allege any facts that show Chisholm neglected his duties, Fleming wrote. Evers spokeswoman Britt Cudaback said in an email to The Associated Press that the governor could not legally take any action in light of Fleming's conclusions.

Chisholm has pushed for ending cash bail, saying it’s not fair to poor defendants. He wants a new system in which only violent offenders are jailed until trial.

I watched some of the trial. He is detached from reality. How this ever reached the level of an actual court proceeding is totally preposterous. The man should’ve been deemed NGI and sent away to mendota state hospital forever. Instead there was this spectacle

WHY and WHO was responsible for this and why aren't they held accountable?

Whats the point in wasting limited resources in an overbloated government, on a piece of human garbage such as this?  Society would be better served if people like this who commit such crimes, are just put to death after a speedy trial.

I've got a 7.62 x 51 that would fit the bill nicely... or maybe a .45 Hydra-shok...

While you have a point one thing govt has some responsibility in is keeping violent people incarcerated.  They are rarely going to be there to protect us but once someone has proven to society they are a massive risk to others its govt's responsibility to keep them in prison.   We see this every single day in America violent offenders keep committing violent crimes.  By far the easiest way to reduce violent crime is to keep violent people locked up.

You bet he is responsible, but the fucks responsible for his release were too busy worrying about their political enemies rather than doing the job they were supposed to be doing.  Fucking POS as well.

there really should be charges laid for negligance causing death ' to those who blindly released clearly violent criminals  to commit violent crime again.

theres an arguement that if they did there due dilligence or just there fucking job for that matter, these people would be still alive.

Nop finger pointing is justified.  You have a crazy fuck booked on shooting at thete neigbor. In a rational world you do not lower the bail you set it at a million or so and hold tight .

In MN they keep letting shit bags out who continue to commit more crimes awaiting trial  and they continue to let them out again  . And here we are with massive spikes in crime and now it is tge cops fault for not doing there job . Can't make this shit up and idiots believe it
