Ford moving all small car production to Mexico

Recommended Posts

Within the next two years, Ford will no longer build any small cars in the United States, the automaker said Thursday.

Production of the Ford (F) Focus and C-Max, the only small cars Ford still assembles in the United States, will be moved to Mexico, according to a Ford spokeswoman. Ford has previously said it was opening a new plant in Mexico that would employ 2,800 workers there.

The Ford Fiesta subcompact is already being assembled in Mexico. The high-performance Ford Focus RS is made in Germany.

After Focus production moves to Mexico, Ford will move the production of other vehicles into the Wayne. Mich. plant where the Focus is currently made, Ford spokeswoman Kelli Felker said. The automaker has said previously that the new Mexican plant will not result in any U.S. job losses.

Ford will not be the first of the traditional "Big Three" automakers to stop building small cars in the U.S. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCAM) currently sells only two small cars in the United States, the Dodge Dart and the Fiat 500. FCA plans to completely stop production of the Dart, which is built in Illinois, by the end of September. That will leave only the 500, which is already produced in Mexico.

General Motors (GENERAL MOTORS) currently makes both the Chevrolet Cruze compact car and Chevrolet Sonic subcompact in the U.S.

Cars assembled in Mexico often use at least some parts produced in the United States. Profit margins on small cars are generally slimmer than those on larger cars or SUVs, so maintaining low labor costs can be more critical for these vehicles.

While Mexico raised its minimum wage this year, it remains substantially below that found in the United States.

According to Littler, the Mexican Minimum Wage Commissiondetermined to increase the minimum wage for 2015 by 4.2 percent, which follow the inflation rate. That makes the wage 70.10 pesos a day for Zone A and 66.45 pesos for Zone B.

Zone A covers most metropolitan areas, including the capital, Mexico City.

Urgent: Do You Think the Minimum Wage Should Be Raised?

In dollars, both are less than $5, The Wall Street Journal reported. The U.S. minimum wage is $7.25 per hour, more than Mexico’s minimum salary for a day’s work.

The original proposal to the commission was an increase by 23 percent to 83 pesos, but to increase the minimum wage above the rate of inflation would necessitate a change in law.

Estimates indicate 6.5 million Mexicans, 13 percent of the workforce, earn the minimum wage, according to the government statistics agency, the WSJ reported.

Just don't buy them if they are made in mexico. Then watch them scramble to come back. Fuck mexico and fuck any cars assembled there.

Apparently the cars made there equal the ones made here.  So what can we do better.

That's just Union bullshit

It sure sounds like it, but most of my customers with global operations have indicated an approx 7% labour cost component that is fairly consistent regardless of country.  Material costs tend to be much more significant.

We can support American workers. A car is a major purchase and only a complete moron buys one not assembled here then complains about a weak economy and job losses.
