 i forgot , you're a building expert . I should tell my buddy , who's been building for almost 40 years , that you told him he was wrong for using blocks

well we know you have an aversion to modern building techniques.  block foundations are seen in 40's and 50's houses or in additions done before they boomed concrete anywhere for short money when they couldn't get a truck back there.  These days insulated concrete panels would be a good choice with finished basement space.

Naaaa, he doesn't know what he's doing.  He never built any houses before that one with block before his, in almost 40 yeara..  It's would probably crumble in a few years, if not months

It does take somebody with a tad more skill on a backhoe to back fill a block foundation though.  I'd rather you not ask how I know that. :)

I do, like what?

Block foundations are still used today. Like I said, all depends on what type of land you're building on?   You don't know what you're talking about , but I'm wrong because you're a banker

Extra living space, and lot cheaper than building more house.

For sure its cheaper to get extra space.  But I don't need the space for anything.  After my last house I swore off stairs and will never have them again.  I tried to swear off any more then 3 bedrooms but the wife trumped me on that but I did get no stairs out of the deal.

I wouldn't have another house without a basement.  I had a house with a crawl space before. Fuck that.

My basement is actually more square footage than my upstairs.

What's wrong with a basement

Has nothing to do with being in the sticks   Lots of people do block walls. They are especially good if you want to finish your basement.  Way better for heat down there   All depends on what type of soil you have. Buddy of mine is in all sand and did block walls.  His basement is warm all winter

Sorry to tell you....but the desert is cold a night.

I get paid to climb for a living...  don't need to do it at home.  40 years old.  All the kids are adults and don't live at home anymore.  why climb stairs if you don't have to....  plus Rosa can vacuum the entire house without anybody helping her at all.  She can't climb stairs!!!  Downsized from 5 bed room to 4 bedroom with 2600 sq ft on 1 level.  Still to big but I got the no stairs clause thru and the wife got more then 3 bedrooms.

My current house is an 1800 sqft bungalow with full basement. If the old lady would let me put a big screen in the living room, I'd never go down stairs except to fill the water softener and change the furnace filter. At this point we go down there for 2 hours on Sunday nights.

block walls leak last thing that anyone should use if your finishing your basement.

Lots of poured concrete walls crack and can leak. Nothing wrong with blocks especially if it's properly sealed from the outside. Our 1950's block wall has never had a leak.

but lets face the fact that 50's was about the time that block walls were the current technology in most places.  Maybe in MI it's still market accepted but around here and in most places i have been it's standard to have poured concrete and now mixing in precast concrete panels. Block can work just fine and in the proper soil not leak but if i was building today it would be insulated poured concrete with in slab heat and really good drainage if i was planning on finishing the basement for anything besides storage not concrete block.

I would never build a house without a basement in an area where you can have one just to have a better place for storage and mechanical but there are many parts of the country where slabs are normal.  I had a camp with a crawlspace which was fine because it was deep enough to have my water system under the house.
