Hey...I am a MAGA that actually believes in climate change. But there is nothing we can do about it ....taxes, windmills and solar aren't going to help and we have already breached the tipping point where even if we went to zero CO2 emissions, it won't make any difference at this point. So burn all the oil you want. Sure warm temps allow for storms to hold more moisture, that's just a basic fact and adaptation is the only solution IMO.......but the frequency of storms thus far are really not out of the ordinary.. The intensities seem to be worsening.......but I kinda like to watch this unfold. Have always been interested in meteorology and it's kind of exciting. Almost like when a big blizzard is bearing down. I don't know why some people think I'm a little twisted.. Quote

Going to be an interesting week in Florida. @Kivalo you be safe if you actually head that way. I wish I could convince my brother out of staying put, Safety Harbor where he is won’t be a flood concern, but 150mph winds are a different story. Thanks! I'm in Punta Gorda now, trying to decide how best to proceed. We got nearly 36hrs before it makes landfall which means about 24 or so before it gets shitty. A run to the Keys is about 18hrs. So its time to shit or get off the pot as they say. However the closer we get to the Keys the better it gets so the rough part should be over early. An unknowns is the fuel amount on board, need to check that first. If the Keys arent an option then I was thinking of setting a spread of anchors in the end of one these fingers in PG, try and find one as "inland" as possible to minimize the storm surge effect. Or maybe utilize the mangroves. there countless little inlets in the mangroves we could bow into and tie off. Not sure if thats a good idea or not. One thing I know for sure is I have ZERO interest in being in Punta Gorda when this makes landfall. None whatsoever. 3 Quote

I shopped for homes in the South Padre area and that was the feedback from the realtors, expect something every 6-8 years. Expect Federal insurance to only pay 20% of what is needed, and expect to self fund much of your rebuild unless its catastrophic loss. Quote

Mainecat Posted October 8 Posted October 8 I have friends who owned property in Punta Gorda years ago that was wiped out. They moved to North Carolina. Now they are considering coming back to New England. A friend lives in Dunedin they evacuated to Kissimmee last night. The storm is going right over Dunedin. Quote

My brother along with another 4/5 couples close to them are riding it out in Safety Harbor just west of Dunedin. SH is high ground though, unlike Dunedin. Quote
Gold Member Kivalo Posted October 8 Gold Member Posted October 8 Well my dad's wife just shut down the whole idea of moving the boat... "the forcast might be wrong and the storm heads south, you just dont know. your father is 85 years old and the boat is insured for more than its worth so fuck it. Leave it at the dock, you have a hotel reservation in Fort Lauderdale." Decision has been made LOL 2 Quote

Apperently, up until the Ian and now Milton, its been like 20 years since Punta Gorda got anything very serious here. Quote

Trust me when I say this...bigger is better. BUT if you have the right temperament you will love it!!! Van life will likely transition easily to boat life! Quote
