Milwaukee ready to sue Kia and Hyundai

Recommended Posts

They are blaming the car manufactures for car theft.  How fucking misdirected can our liberal government idiots be.  Arrest the criminals stealing them!!!

MILWAUKEE — Milwaukee City Attorney Tearman Spencer said his office is "poised and ready" to file a lawsuit against automakers Kia and Hyundai amid the ongoing rash of car thefts.

"If we get the word that the city wants to do this, we will have it filed immediately within minutes," said Spencer.

The two manufacturers are the two most commonly stolen car brands in the city.

"In my estimation, Milwaukee is ground zero for this 'Kia matter' and where things have started. There's a lot of damage that has occurred in our backyard," he said.

Recent Stories from tmj4.com

According to Milwaukee Police, 8,096 vehicles were stolen in 2022 and 58% were made by Kia or Hyundai. So far this year, 1,194 cars have been stolen and 52% of those were manufactured by those two automakers.

"We should be doing something immediately," he said.

Spencer said he just needs the city's Common Council to approve the filing of the lawsuit. As soon as that happens, the city would join what's called a multi-jurisdiction litigation in federal court, joining other cities like Seattle and Madison.

"I think whether it's Madison or Milwaukee or other cities filing suit, it can benefit drivers all across the state," said Madison's City Attorney Michael Haas. The council there voted to move forward with a lawsuit on Tuesday.

"We are attempting to recover costs that our Police Department and our first responders have incurred, but I think also equally as important or more important is to actually get the manufacturers to fix the problem," said Haas.

Governments are not the only ones suing these automakers.

A Milwaukee resident filed a class action lawsuit last month seeking damages, not only for himself, but for all victims who have had their Kia Or Hyundai Vehicles (models 2015-2022 with insert and turn style key systems) stolen.

For city governments, the compensation for the lawsuits would allow cities to focus on the danger motor vehicle thefts poise to the community, said both of the attorneys.

"It's not only the thefts of vehicles but it's tending to be those vehicles being involved in other activity; whether it's joyriding, ending up in collision or other thefts," said Haas.

"Even if we enter into something and Kia do what they need to do, we still need to address the underlying problems that we have and what has developed since the beginning of this," said Spencer.

In a statement Friday, a spokesperson for Hyundai said, "Hyundai is committed to ensuring the quality and integrity of our products. All Hyundai vehicles meet the anti-theft requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 114. In response to increasing thefts targeting Hyundai vehicles without push-button ignitions and immobilizing anti-theft devices in the U.S., Hyundai has introduced a free anti-theft software upgrade to prevent the vehicles from starting during a method of theft popularized on TikTok and other social media. All Hyundai vehicles produced since November 2021 are equipped with an engine immobilizer as standard equipment. Hyundai is also providing free steering wheel locks to law enforcement agencies for distribution to local residents who own or lease affected models."

Kia America did not respond to Friday's request for a response to the lawsuits that are being filed, but as mentioned in previous reporting, that company has also offered software upgrades that they hope will curb the theft issues.

How about suing all the social media sites, youtube and and any website who allowed the step by step instructions on how to steal these vehicles to be posted on their platforms??

Kind of like saying we can sue the company who makes the locksets for the doors on our house because someone posted step by step instructions on the internet how to pick the door locks and rob someone's home...... rofl.png.e8dcd05771b79e5e11d7a1b86a0b9db5.png

My insurance doubled from last year on 3 Ram trucks in Ontario. The manufacturers should be held responsible for making vehicles this easy to steal. It’s interesting that remote updates can be done on these vehicles, they can be tracked and controlled with a app, but when they are stolen none of these systems can be used to track or disable the vehicle. There is currently no incentive for the manufactures to make cars harder to steal. When cars get stolen, insurance covers the losses and people buy new vehicles.

How much should they do? Many newer cars are harder to steal and theives ar4e breaking into dealerships and getting the keys.

We should go back to chopping off hands of thieves that’s a pretty good deterrent much better than jail.

No, I want them working and paying back what they stole. But instead we are stuck with them having a 1/2 hr chat with a probation officer. Its a jobs program.

Stealing keys from a dealer, the dealer should have had them more secure. Also being new cars, all the stolen vehicles should have been able to be remotely disabled and tracked. This is also a different scenario than people easily copying keys from the front door and stealing your vehicle in 30 second.

A few years ago I never would’ve guessed such a thing as a stolen Kia could exist.

Because it is all about parts. The car as a whole is worthless,  hard to get rid of.

Trump was president then that’s why it wasn’t a problem. Now? The guy you cherish is the problem.

Not in Ontario, Canada ! Container loads are leaving the port of Montreal daily. There are vehicles all over the world driving round with the Ontario plates still attached ! Kinda makes one wonder just how many levels are involved in this theft business. Lots of cops turn a blind eye to this type of crime as well, any chance some of those pockets are getting greased as well ?

Like others have stated, IF THE PUNISHMENT FIT THE CRIME, CRIME WOULD GO DOWN ! Take a hard look at the nationality of who is actually committing these crimes. How about deportation on your first offence ! But all the do gooders say nah, they can be turned around and become useful to society. Not a fukking chance in hell. This stuff is being done by organized crime, and it pays very well.

I,m kinda surprised someone hasn,t come up with a secure box these fobs can be put in, but then there probably would be more armed vehicle thefts going on in parking lots.

Here, they are taking air bags, converter, wheels. Drivetrain,  if it is something like a Hellcat,  then dumping it back on road. Not like the old days where you could swap one vin number tag and sell it.
My Son in law had a high dollar Ram stolen off the lot.  We could see exactly where it was in a Detroit back yard,  from the tracker.  Sitting at the table hitting the panic button to make alarm sound.  Police said it would take days before they could make it over there.

Three classics were recently stolen from a local dealer. The dummy got caught trying to sell the Grand National at the Detroit auto show.
