Supreme Court rules Manhattan prosecutor can access Trump financial records

Recommended Posts

Trumps doomed. He’s going to walk and need a Pence pardon.

“Two hundred years ago, a great jurist of our Court established that no citizen, not even the President, is categorically above the common duty to produce evidence when called upon in a criminal proceeding," Chief Justice John Roberts wrote for the majority. "We reaffirm that principle today and hold that the President is neither absolutely immune from state criminal subpoenas seeking his private papers nor entitled to a heightened standard of need."

The Supreme Court issued rulings in two cases related to President Trump's financial records this morning.

If you're just tuning in now, here's what you need to know about the rulings:

  • The case about House subpoenas: The Supreme Court blocked House Democrats from accessing Trump's financial records for now, sending the case back down to the lower court for further review.
  • The case about the New York subpoena: Justices ruled that the President is not immune from a subpoena for his financial documents from a New York prosecutor. This case was also sent to a lower court for further review.
  • What this means for Trump's financial records: Since the cases will be handled at lower courts, it all but ensures that Trump's financial documents — which he has long sought to protect — will not be handed over before the November presidential election.
  • How Trump is reacting: Trump has sent multiple tweets since the rulings were released. He claimed the court gave him a "delayed ruling" that they "never would have given" to another president. Remember: In both cases, both of Trump's appointees — Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh — joined the liberal justices and Chief Justice John Roberts on the 7-2 majorities.

Personally I'm more concerned about those that get wealthy while in office more so than those that come into office wealthy.

The whole notion of public servants having to release their personal finances is absurd.  That and health records.

During the years they are public servants I believe those records should be public.

I don't agree that all of their finances should be open if they have other lines of business.  If I run a shoe store and decide to run for congress, I'm fine showing what I make as a member of congress, but you have no right to know what's going on in my private business.

He’s not immune...end of story.

its not a law so no immunity talk should even come into play.       i guess its time to demand Pelosi and others turn their records over.  she cant refuse.  i mean shes not immune to bullshit rulings either.¬¬

has nothing to do with a law of providing your taxes for political office.   It's a fraud case where the prosecutors have asked for evidence that they ask for in similar cases day in day out.   The prosecution may be political but breaking the law is breaking the law.  They may not be able to indict him while in office but Jan of 2020 or 2024 they can.  And IMO there is zero question he has at some point committed tax fraud,  pretty much everyone in his business has most just aren't worth chasing.
