The Dems are in a spot with their base (ie MC and the revstd types) where they have promised a path to be rid of Trump and this is as close a solution as they can muster. The problem is they have little support from the voters and the Pandora's box they are opening is almost certain to ruin any hopes of retaking the Whitehorse. The smart political play to take at this point would be to have a vote on the imaginary articles of impeachment and to have Pelosi allow the 30 + dems in districts that were won by Trump to break ranks and vote against impeachment.
