We have seen presidents make errors, we have never seen a presidents whose policies have so negatively affected the markets until now, and it's not only the markets it's the pork and soybean farmers, manufacturing, etc.

This is just plain stupid.

Dow plunges more than 500 points on trade war fears after China retaliates to US tariffs

Stocks plunged at the open on Wednesday after China announced new tariffs on 106 more U.S. products, increasing worries.

The Dow Jones industrial average tanked more than 500 points, with Boeing and Caterpillar leading all stocks in the index lower. The S&P 500 dropped 1.3 percent, with tech and industrials as the worst-performing sectors. The Nasdaq composite declined 1.6 percent.

"I think the market is just concerned about this thing escalating right now," James Paulsen, chief investment strategist at The Leuthold Group, told CNBC's "Squawk Box." "It's not so bad if we have a few tariffs on a few products, but if it escalates worldwide, … then you're really threatening the recovery globally."

China's Ministry of Commerce said the tariffs are designed to target up to $50 billion in U.S. products annually and would hit goods like soybeans and cars.

The move comes less than a day after President Donald Trump issued a list of Chinese imports that the U.S. administration aims to target as part of a crackdown on what the president sees as unfair trade practices.

Automakers were down, with Ford and General Motors off 2 percent and 1.5 percent, respectively. Boeing was also slammed, falling more than 3.5 percent. Caterpillar also declined 3.5 percent, while United Technologies — another Dow component — fell 2.3 percent.

Perceived safe-haven assets got a bid higher on Wednesday. Gold futures rose 0.8 percent to $1,347.60 per ounce while the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield fell to around 2.75 percent. Bond yields move inversely to prices.

Trump tweeted later in the morning: "We are not in a trade war with China, that war was lost many years ago."

Wednesday's moves come a day after the major indexes closed sharply higher as tech rebounded from steep losses seen in Monday's sessions.

In economic news, the ADP National Employment Report showed private companies added 241,000 jobs in March, more than the expected gain of 205,000.

The services purchasing managers' index (PMI) is scheduled for release at 9:45 a.m. ET. Meantime at 10 a.m. ET, non-manufacturing ISM report on business is due as well as factory orders.

It's funny all the Bernie supporters biggest bitch about Obama was his policies helped wall st but did nothing for main st.

Now someone is doing something for main st instead of wall st and they bitch

nothing he has done so far gives anything more than lip service to helping main st.  In a trade war  some iron workers might get jobs,  farmers lose theirs,  small businesses that export close.    Wall street will always get theirs,  they will push companies to drive up prices and  automate and reduce workers to make sure they are getting their returns in the long run.  Trumps dangling thoughts of a return to 50's era blue collar prosperity are horseshit but throw in a little racism to stir emotions and those who will ultimately suffer somehow jump on board and the rich just laugh cause dem or pub in charge they still win.
