Congress moves to ban constitutional carry

"Republicans rejected Democratic amendments that would ban violent offenders from qualifying under the law, as well as a change that would have prevented forum shopping, which means a New York resident barred from obtaining a concealed carry permit could instead send away for one from Texas."

Just have gun owners obtain a fed permit after safety training. Then you can carry in any state legally. The states have over 5000 fuckin laws already. Imagine if your states drivers license was only good in the state it was issued?

And make everybody get a permit from their own state to carry else where and go through extensive vetting to carry a firearm

It does nothing of the sort.   The NRA would NEVER back this bill if it did anything to open carry.

It simply forces reciprocity of CCP from one state to another.   That's it.

What about states rights? You know those states rights that Republicans are always for?

And then look at the stupidity that is bolded below, WTF.

Republicans rejected Democratic amendments that would ban violent offenders from qualifying under the law, as well as a change that would have prevented forum shopping, which means a New York resident barred from obtaining a concealed carry permit could instead send away for one from somewhere else. The bill, which has more than 200 co-sponsors, almost all Republicans, now heads for the floor of the 435-member House. A similar bill, with 38 Republican co-sponsors, is pending before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

A slew of amendments brought by Democrats were shot down, including a proposal by Nadler to ban violent offenders from possessing a concealed handgun and another from Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas to exclude those convicted of domestic violence and stalking. A residency amendment, brought by Democrat Zoe Lofgren of California, was also rejected. The amendment sought to prevent “permit shopping” by prohibiting those living in states with stringent conceal carry permit regulations from applying for permits in more lax states.

Yeah I can imagine what that would all entail.   No fucking way every time a new party is in power the regulations change.  There is a reason the constitution was made difficult to change....so we have long term consistency to some degree in the law.

We are talking about a new law, one that will supersede old laws and cross state lines.

Iowa......hee haw

Which new law were YOU specifically talking about?   The proposed legislation or MC's idea?

The proposed legislation does not change that much other than force existing permits must be allowed by all states while traveling only if the other state allows CC.   It doesn't mean it carriers over if you move.  All other background checks remain in place which are federal anyway.

The House Judiciary Committee late Wednesday voted 19-11 for the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017, which would amend the federal criminal code to allow the concealed transport of handguns across state lines, so long as both states allow it. States will not be able to impose their individual requirements for a concealed carry license on armed travelers from other states

What’s to challenge. Safety training and a background check. Permits issued for 5 years with a refresher safety class required.

You think the dem's would go for that?    Pull this leg and it will play jingle-bells.  R's MIGHT agree to that but what happens when the dem's make changes?   It would be in the courts all the time.

yup a reasonable requirement and one that eliminates the bullshit of multiple state laws.  Coworker has to decide which way he's coming to here in the morning,  if he goes 495 he has to lock his gun in the safe in his wheel well,  if he comes just from nh it is in his bag as he only has a NH carry permit.
