I see no problem with some sort of proof of your identity when voting, but there should be flexibility here. But even with voter id, the biggest issue is fraudulent absentee ballots. No one was checking signatures of any of the absentee ballots for authenticity. As for free, whatever, as long as they are reasonably priced a few bucks to make sure you can buy alcohol, guns, and vote is not a big deal.
