CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — A mandatory seat belt bill is reviving familiar debates about safety versus personal freedom in New Hampshire.

While current state law requires those under 18 to wear seat belts, New Hampshire is the only state that doesn’t make adults buckle up. Lawmakers have repeatedly rejected joining other states, but The Concord Monitor reports that Rep. Mary Jane Mulligan, a Democrat, is trying again this year with a new a bill.

At a public hearing Tuesday, opponents argued that a mandatory seat belt law would infringe on their personal freedoms.

It is the insurance lobby that got laws passed forcing the use of seatbelts.

its nothing to do with saving lives. It’s about saving and making money

Its a great way to pull people over and see what they are up to if it is signed into law.. Id imagine thats the plan..

Cops don't need a law to pull you over.

Law makers would have to decide if it is a primary reason to pull you over.

Actually it started with the automakers. Back in the 80's DOT told the big 3 that if they couldn,t convince 25 states to pass seat belt laws thy would have to start installing airbags. So they spent millions lobbying state legislatures to pass em. Then consumer demand drove the air bags anyways.

I live on the border so I am in and out of Mass daily. I don’t wear a belt unless I am on the highway.

Same hear, or in real shitty weather when not in a plow truck.

Headrests were about the same time. If I remember all cars starting in 69 were required.

Last stats I saw was

Mass , has law 75% wear one

NH , no law 74% wear one.

Mass has no primary enforcement. Out of the 5 guys i work with I'm the only one that wears a seat belt. Once you get used to putting it on it's like a habit.

It’s a secondary offense

I never wear it
