racer254
How hard is it for mental health professionals to diagnose and actually get these people off the streets. Seems like every homicide is caused by some "mentally ill" person. https://www.channel3000.com/court-documents-reveal-blue-mounds-homicide-suspect-has-history-of-mental-illness/

Serious question, Ive been on quite a few abandoned state run mental hospital grounds, AKA loony bins, in multiple states. There's a big one here in Syracuse and a huge one in Harrisburg PA. The one in PA had to hold thousands of people.. Why did all these people get put out on the street and these places get shut down??
spin_dry
Just now, racer254 said: FFS, aren't you in the field? Psychiatric Hospitals. Hospitals are short term stabilization platforms. Either you get comfortable with an occasional grisly murder by a paranoid schizophrenic, or reopen long term state mental hospitals.

Complex issue. I’ll break it down to the three fold explanation. 1. Budget cuts during Reagan’s first term shut down most long term facilities 2. Consumer advocates of mental illness alliances pushed for residential placement. 3. Much better antipsychotic medications. 1

Number 2 was the biggest cause But I see you need to stroke your democrat roots by making sure you throw some republican responsibility in. https://www.npr.org/2017/11/30/567477160/how-the-loss-of-u-s-psychiatric-hospitals-led-to-a-mental-health-crisis The disappearance of long-term-care facilities and psychiatric beds has escalated over the past decade, sparked by a trend toward deinstitutionalization of psychiatric patients in the 1950s and '60s, says Dominic Sisti, director of the Scattergood Program for Applied Ethics of Behavioral Health Care at the University of Pennsylvania. spin_dry
You’re very wrong. It’s #3. It’s allowing mentally ill people to function in a society. Consumer groups pushed for the outside placement with outreach services. Which is good. Edited February 18, 2020 by spin_dry

Medications that better target psychotic episodes have since been developed. I’m a little unsure as to how many truly psychotic individuals are imprisoned these days. Antipsychotics are used quite liberally in prisons....what I question is if prison staff is basically medicating violent criminals and not actual mental illness. Taming of the wolves.
