No no im not xlt. your making the case kids today have the same skill level or more as well as being equiped to handle lifes challenges and from what i see, they dont. its all available and within reach but not utilized. kids are inherently lazy and self entitled, always have been but they are more spoiled today than ever before and wont reach for anything , they need it handed to them.   56 years of being around shows me this more and more.     sooooo many are on happy pills and in need of therapy than ever before. they cant cope.  im not trying to belittle the idea of getting help for problems, ive been the advocate for family members issues for more than 40 yrs so i know when help is needed, its needed.

without their phones or computers most young members of society are lost today imo        we are all going that way too..

 im ooooooooout

I think another problem is stigmatization is down, identification of mental issues is up, and treatment is up. There are plenty of studies that show the level of mental illness or learning disabilities over time has remained somewhat constant. The identfication, treatment, and destigmatization is wayyyyyy up in the last 30 years.

Oh for sure. Don’t disagree at all on that. The trades are suffering a bit. A lot of that is a cyclical change of the employment environment due to increased numbers of people going to college. As it suffers in some areas like trades, those trades incentivize laborers to join them. It’s already in full swing. What these trades are offering for packages has skyrocketed in the last 10 years. The labor will follow it. Just as everyone getting some liberal arts degree has left so many with nothing. Now liberal arts majors are in decline. There is a lag. We’ve undergone a huge work place transition in the last 20+ years. The idea that we are going to get to a point where we don’t have mechanics or HVAC techs is errant IMO. Trades now are becoming hyper aware of tech and how it plays a roll. Cars, furnaces, electrical systems, etc get more complicated. This generation as it adjusts to the changing work environment will be better suited to it.

My Masters thesis for my MBA is on this very topic. The biggest problem facing this generation is they are finding out too late that a formal four year degree may not be right. Your generation is leaving the workplace now, shortening the current generations ability to learn on the job from 20+ year veterans of that field.

Well said. :bc:

Thanks. I didn’t think we were too far apart. It’s not so much this generation is a bunch of Thai ladybois, it’s they just don’t know what they don’t know yet. The ability is there.

Alot remains to be seen.

I commented on the phone and social media aspect but apparently you have a lot of time on your hands today. I think millennials are very educated especially in technology...can they change their own oil maybe maybe not but who really cares?

We all share the same technology, however they do adapt to it with relative ease over us elders.  Just like we did with computers compared to our elders, well at least some.

That does not make one smarter, unless they know what answers to seek out and how to apply them.  This seems like a very natural progression to me.

My kid can change his own oil, and tires, and brakes etc, now he is learning to fly planes.  Never lose sight of being capable with your hands.

Really?  They need to go to zero or extinction.

Also, you only need a degree to work for someone else dude, masters included.  My wife can tell you all about hers and the PHD.

I agree 100% with this. And truthfully its easy to lose sight of this and disparage a whole generation because of this very fact. I've done it a few times myself. I've never forgotten a conversation I had with a co-worker about this very subject. We had a new hire join our team, fresh out of college and obviously very green. I mean he called a ratchet a "clicky thing" kind of green. This guy was supposed to be a ME. Anyway my co-worker and I, being the old farts of the group, were in the lunch room making fun of this guy and ripping the shit out of all the  things that were wrong with the "millennial" generation. A young lady (19) at the next table overheard everything we were saying, must have had enough and proceeded to remind us that our generation (parents) were responsible for their children's upbringing and we bore some responsibility for how they turned out, good or bad. Honestly I had to agree with her. XLT you are a bright and articulate young man and I admire your ability to see both sides of an issue no matter what it is. If you are a representation of the majority of your generation then this country will be fine. I just hope someone will still be willing to change my shitty diaper in a few years.....:flush:

Without back reading too much in depth...whether this is “sad” or not to some, it doesn’t matter.  This is the new reality.  Every generation has had their own obstacles to overcome and have managed to do so just fine.  Gotta remember that every generation has said they  “don’t expect much” from the ones coming after them.  Yet, we’ve all done pretty well.

What I am seeing is the millenials and after have unique situations they are going to have to manage.  But, they didn’t create it all themselves.  Pretty sure their parents were the ones wanting everyone to get a trophy, yes?

It would also seem that the spreading of misery and hatred while discounting success and exceptionalism has seemingly become more popular.  “Social media warriors” are always on alert to identify the next successful target to take down. They are the haters and life-suckers to those that want to be exceptional and successful.  As if one’s own sacrifice, dedication and determination to reach success should have been spread around equally or some absurd shit after they’ve become so.  That’s a big one to overcome.  What’s the saying? “Socialism’s inherent virtue is the sharing of misery.” (I’ll have to look that one up again).  I think the new breed of socialists have substituted “success” in the place of “misery”.  Ha!  No.

I also think it’s a bit harder for every generation to be as “successful” as the last so, the definition of “success” starts to change.  That’s fine, success is a fluid term and each can have their own definition as/if it brings one happiness.  I do catch myself wondering if it really does though..again, haters and life suckers seem to be everywhere.

Let’s not call all the millennials and younger ones the “miserables” exclusively either.  Look at this board.  Ewww....grown men wallering and trying to spread hatred, self pity and sadness...every fucking day.

Yeah noticed that about a few poll takers in here.

Guy, you started in right away with a personal attack on me without anyone mentioning you. I even buried the hatchet with you months ago. You just couldn’t resist, and wonder why certain people say what they say about you. Just a casual observance.

Smh.  I wonder what your thoughts are on the full frontal assault against Trump in much of the media right now?  Can you put that in context? Do you disagree with it?   I understand that many generations look to the younger generations and see weakness and ignorance.  I’m not doing that even though I often feel that way I don’t think I’ve ever seen a younger generation write off the older generation as if they are less informed, have less critical thinking skills, have less life experience or are somehow inferior to their own generation.   But that seems to be the bullshit that you are trying to perpetuate.  Arrogance and ignorance doesn’t even begin to describe it.  I am the parent of two successful young millennial’s, thank God they don’t have your attitude.

You are one of the worst offenders on this forum when it comes to making Ageist arguments.
