saw roger hodgson last night (supertramp) who was outstanding. listening to the raw talent, and thinking about the recent death of tom petty, I was wondering who's going to fill these voids? some damn boy band dancing around to digitized music? rappers who do nothing but talk about BS, playing no instruments?

Me and a buddy were talking about this after TP died.  Eddie Money is coming to town and we were saying that all the REAL artists are dying out.  Ones that write, compose, perform and actually do it all have been replaced with marketing gimmicks, a corporate staff of writers and composers and a voice...and rarely a talented one....as long as they can dance and have the face for the "show".

Sad.

we have some pretty big acts come to the state fair here in Syracuse. one was some rap band (dunno the name), which consisted of several dudes walking around on stage mumbling shit. no instruments and I think they played for something like 20 minutes total. we were leaving as all the "musically challenged" people were headed in to the show. I heard it was close to a record crowd. then you have this guy playing in a casino ballroom. sad, sad, sad..

The only thing good about the state fair....they tore down and turned it into a parking lot.

The current bands or musicians  I would pay to see are few and far between..

Yes, a couple times. I wouldnt make that much so only if they really needed me..Id get paid $50 to work and the rest was all tips. So a good concert would be a $300 tip evening, usually pour about 1500-2000 cups myself.. with dirt week, the people would go drink in the parking lot, or it was so cold sometimes the hot chocolate and coffee stands would kill it, we would sell 50 cups of beer.. Remember when it snowed during the race the one year??:wind:

My son listens to Rap, as does most of his friends and they think our music sucks! I hope some day he/they wake up and realize there is more to music than someone who can just rhyme.

Eddie Money is not a legend like Tom Petty and some of the others who have recently passed. Truth is nobody is going to fill those shoes. Music nowadays is a commercially produced product and the same goes for the "artist". I actually went to go see David Allen Coe 2 weeks ago. I heard he was going to be in town and I didnt even think that dude was still alive. For the record he is not looking good  but i got a handful of buds together to go see him. Had to scratch that one off of my list.

I have seen so many legends perform live and when I think about what will be next its kind of sad. Remember the rock shows from the 70's and 80's? It was a theater like production. And they actually played instruments. We were at a local club back in the early 90's and Rick Derringer was the headline. The flyer said "Rick Derringer famous for Rock n Roll Hoochie Coo!" We laughed our asses off. We are like how many times is this dude gonna play rock n roll hoochie coo. Rick made us eat those words because he fucking rocked. Dude is major talented. So many others when you see them live you are just in awe of the raw talent they have. That is something you cant teach or produce. And i think we are losing that.
