You just want to control how much and think it will have no effect on future innovations.

fuckingaright. to take an existing drug that's suddenly found to have a dual use...then be able to jack up the price several thousand percent should be considered a criminal act.

We don't live in a black and white world. Are you against late term abortions if the mother's life is at risk or the fetus has a fatal or significant defect?

And for the record I'm from Canada where abortion law is extremely open and late term abortions are legal.

Or just have it the same price in all countries.   Goes up for some down for others.  Easy fix.   Countries that won't pay a bit more simply don't get it.

So do they offer their drugs around the world for less than they offer them here?

of course. other countries have price controls.

And if we are allowed to buy from foreign suppliers it will change for everyone.

I just think its a dangerous road to go down the govt trying to predict the level of margin that is acceptable.   I'd rather see the market do it.

How would the market control the price of a drug that has a 25 yr patent on it?

Patents are 17 years and after drug testing and final approval, a drug company likely has about 7 years to itself.  Most of the major Pharma are in the business of patent replacement as there isn't as much money competing with generics.

Funny how people think they know so much about the pharmaceutical industry.

   That's complete bullshit.   Things like joint replacement and lasik eye surgery have come down over time as more and more places do it.

With lasik they brought the price down because by doing so they could sell more surgeries. Technology has lowered prices far more than actual competition has rare do you see people really price shopping for medical service or a med facility advertising an MRI for less than the other guys like you do in almost every other industry

Competition plays into technology (make more of them the cheaper they are to sell)  and people do not have to shop around for competition to effect pricing.  Simply having more available drives down costs.   Simple supply and demand.  If I have the equipment around to do a procedure but are not doing enough to pay it off chances are the price will come down.  While I agree insurance causes less shopping around it still happens for selective procedures.

lasik, for all practical purposes is considered cosmetic. the cost of cosmetic surgery has increased 30% compared to the 120% cost increase of non-cosmetic surgeries over the same time period.
