On Oct. 29, 2024, he shoveled snow at the Little Italy restaurant in South Anchorage. (James Oh/Alaska Public Media) Southcentral Alaska’s first snowstorm of the season led to slick roads Tuesday, closing schools across the region, including in Anchorage. City police reported dozens of car crashes, and advised drivers to slow down. Anchorage School District officials said the hazardous road and weather conditions prompted them to declare a remote learning day for all schools except Girdwood PreK-8 and cancel after-school activities for the day. The University of Alaska Anchorage also closed its campus Tuesday due to unsafe road conditions, and Alaska Pacific University is having a remote learning day. Meanwhile, the Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District declared a remote learning day for schools in its northern areas, with all others except the Glacier View School on a delayed start. Kenai Peninsula Borough School District also announced an array of closures and two-hour delays. The wave of closures follows a snowstorm that started Monday and continued overnight, dumping up to a foot or more of snow in parts of Southcentral before tapering by Tuesday afternoon. Abdul Elgdi cleans snow off his car in downtown Anchorage on Oct. 29, 2024. (James Oh/Alaska Public Media) Meteorologist Kenna Mitchell said the storm dropped 11.5 inches of snow near the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport on the west side of town, with lesser totals in other parts of the city, including 6 inches at both Rabbit Creek and the Campbell Creek Science Center. Reports of regional snowfall from the Mat-Su Borough ranged from 10 to 12 inches in the Big Lake and Meadow Lakes areas, with a Kenai Peninsula report of 14.5 inches from the Kenai Keys area, near Sterling. HEAT Halloween could bring record-high temperatures to more than 30 cities Conditions in many parts of the U.S. on Thursday are expected to be 10 to 30 degrees warmer than average. The annual Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade in New York on Oct. 19.Yuki Iwamura / AP SAVE Create your free profile or log in to save this article Oct. 31, 2024, 8:34 AM AKDT By Randi Richardson and Denise Chow The Summary This Halloween is expected to be far warmer than usual in many parts of the country. More than 30 cities across the Northeast could set new temperature records on Thursday. The unseasonable heat comes amid an autumn that has been warmer than usual in various regions of the U.S. For trick-or-treaters in many parts of the country, this Halloween may not have that familiar chill in the air. More than 30 cities across the Northeast could set record-high temperatures on Thursday, including Boston, New York and Washington, D.C. Many Midwestern cities, too, are expected to see temperatures 10 to 30 degrees warmer than usual for this time of year. Boston is expected to reach a high of 80 degrees Fahrenheit, which would make it one of the warmest Halloweens in the last 80 years, according to Caitlyn Mensch, a forecaster with the National Weather Service in Boston. The city’s current record of 81 degrees was set on Oct. 31, 1946. “It’s quite above normal for this time of year,” Mensch said. Given the unseasonable warmth, she recommended that trick-or-treaters make an effort to stay hydrated and wear sunscreen if it is still light out. New York City on Thursday is forecasted to hit 78 degrees, and a high of 81 is expected in Washington, D.C. In the Midwest, temperatures will be similarly balmy for late October. Cleveland could reach 78 degrees, and the forecasted high of 68 degrees in St. Louis could rank this year within the top 30 warmest Halloweens in the area over the past century, said Jared Maples, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s local office in St. Louis Quote
