Bridge Collapse Baltimore Maryland

Naming the new bridge should be a contentious debate.  Doubt they want to name it the same as it was which was after a former slave owner

This would have never happened if that ship was all electric and battery powered...........

Bit surprised ships of this size didn't need mandatory tug escorts for this reason alone.

How long before it hit the bridge did it lose power?   Did it not have a chance to drop anchor?

Supposedly the port puts its own drivers in the boats for these trips.  Likely Port will be paying which will have some sweet government funding to get it done.

I doubt the port/river pilot is responsible for mechanical failures aboard any ship they are there to guide the ship to safely navigate the river up and down the water ways, mechanical failure wouldn't fall on the port Pilot

It would if they had time to drop anchor and didn't.

You cant drop the anchor if you have no power and the anchor may or may not stop a ship that size when in motion, that river bottom is more than likely a muddy mess and anchor is to hold you in place when stopped.

Fox News said they had 3 minutes from mayday call to collision.  Doesn’t appear the crew in charge of the boat dropped anchor until the last minute according to report.  Which makes sense as the last little bit the ship made a sharp turn by the videos….  Wonder if that sharp turn was the anchor pulling the nose of the ship around.

They briefly had power and if they went in full reverse it will cause the ship to kick sideways also.... so wait and see what the experts come up with in their investigation

Or there was a stack fire possibly from one of the diesel generators blowing up??

There should be a river/harbor pilot on board which kind of makes me think there was a mechanical failure and the ship lost its steering and auxiliary steering?

There was a pilot on board.

Looks like there were a couple instances of power failure on the ship.

There were two instances caught on video, perhaps more over all. Clearly they had electrical issues.

They had escort tugs but the tugs were released before this occured.  As for the anchor usually the anchors are kept ready to deploy for just such an emergancy. It seems as though this happened so quickly that the anchor deployment was too late to be of any real benefit. I want to get more information on the anchor deployment, they may have been late on that or maybe they just didnt have time. Im not 100% positive.

Either could be true although heavy throttle inpute would definitely be happening right about then.

For those of you interested in this, a guy on youtube, Sal Marcogliano runs a channel called "Whats Going On With Shipping". He does a great job breaking these incidents down. I havent had a chance to check yet but if he doesnt have a video up yet he will soon.

I was wondering if the anchor deployment was a cause of the course change into the bridge support.  :dunno:
