It's funny listening to people's reasons for giving up riding.

I decided it was over 3-4 years ago. Got rid of my last sled this fall. Figured that we would rent when we got the urge. I only rode once this year. The other times we were going to ride, we cancelled because the trails sucked and it wasn't worth renting. It's nowhere near as much fun as having your own studded sled and set up the way you like it but it's hassle free.

I haven't looked back. I can take a couple of flights out west or down South to surf for less money than owning sleds. A few hours trailering followed by putting gas in the sleds isn't much cheaper than driving a car to Tremblant to ski. 

The main problem is that I like to get a work out when I ride. That means riding fast, standing up and kicking the shit out of the moguls, cornering fast etc. Not like an idiot in blind corners but fast and if you can see through the trees pegging it.

The majority of sledders think my style of riding is bad for the sport. They think you should be bored and drive like an old woman.

The trouble is the sport is no longer the off-road, no rules sport it use to be. I'm glad they cracked down on the drunks but getting stopped 5 times in one day and having someone demand your papers, where you have been and where you are going takes away the freedom. Also having them set up radar on wide open fields and tagging people for exceeding 50kph (30mph) is fucking stupid. Sleds are amazing. When most sleds sold have more than 120hp and fantastic suspensions, having the speed limit the same as the 70's is dumb. I know they had to partner with the OPP for insurance purposes but they ended up giving cops  a cash cow where they could set up in a straight away and write tickets all day.

Cops are definitely better past Sudbury but trailering 6 hours for a weekend isn't my idea of fun.

I get more of a sense of freedom  hiking into off piste areas at a ski hill than I have from sledding in years.

 

 

 

 

Being constantly harassed by the gestapo while sledding would suck.  Back country riding is by far my favorite thing to do.  You get to places nobody else ever could except maybe with a helicopter.

You are not going to get decent weather constantly where you are from to ride locally.  But for what its worth I would not be in this sport if I had to trailer every time to ride, in fact I would never have started at all.  I got into it because of my son after I bought our place up north in Parry Sound.  The I can only do one thing either summer or winter also does not jive with me, its nice to have all seasons covered and there is nothing better in the winter to do than sledding.  Once you start involving other family members it just cost more no matter what you do.

I wanna ride up there next year.  Would love to take my son as well. I heard the trails are fantastic and always well maintained.   Let me know if you don't mind if we join you for a Canada trip next year

Not to bad from what I was told, I haven't seen it yet it's in the trailer, worst part is it took out a nice Racepak Avenger 3, I'm very thankful to be in as good of condition as I am.

Sorry to hear of your accident.  There seems to have been a lot more  8re accidents around me this year fwiw.

 

Heal up and get back on the horse. You shouldn't  give it up just for this reason  but perhaps take things a little  slower and enjoy your surroundings  more!

i have ridden with one since 04,  went over the bars again this weekend when pitched off by a tree riding in the woods.  i had to go up 2 sizes to have it be comfortable originally.  sizes run big on the tekvest and small on the klim jackets.

I will take some time to decide, the crash alone wouldn't stop me, the number of shit winters is probably the biggest part.

I do ride slower in the more scenic areas, this may just have been my age catching up with me.

I use to say that if I took my car out and wound it out every time I drove it, I'd lose my license. But sledding you can actually use all the horsepower and suspension you pay for.

I have a 1 XL keweenaw jacket. It fits pretty much perfect. I don't think I can squeeze a Tek vest in there.

We used to get decent weather here but not anymore.  I don't even care if it's not an entire season's worth - even a couple solid weeks would be nice but it is what it is.  Anyway, at this point in my life I'm sticking close to home and I do have both seasons covered.  I rebuild planes in the winter and fly em in the summer.
