favoritos Posted January 25, 2021 Share Posted January 25, 2021 Drug pricing is a complicated business. There is not a simple way to summarize the process. Those two are both bio drugs. Spendy stuff with the additional distribution requirements. Typically they are sold as a pricing package along with a slew of less costly drugs. The margins are then spread across the mix. Singling out specific pricing requirements on two drug classes creates a budgeting nightmare. The patient cost savings on those two are essentially subsidized by pricing spread across the mix. It gets super complicated when the very few manufactures of these two drugs must absorb the margins within their own sku's. It basically means they need to charge more on everything else to cover the subsidized drugs. It is surprisingly normal to do this already. But, the overall drug pricing package needs restructuring with each new set of regulations. I'm guessing the "hold" on requirements for these two is because everyone needs to take a look at the overall pricing structure and determine the best options for overall care. Singling out two costly and visible drugs is good publicity and gets easy support. It may not create the best overall package for patients, manufactures, and providers. It could also get real messy if the few manufactures making these drugs say it's not worth it anymore.
