I bought my kid a 1999 mxz 600 last year. I paid $800 for it and threw about $200 in for new bearings and carbides. I figure he can learn the ropes on that. If he doesnt like it I dont have much money in it. If he crashes it I dont have much money into it. So far so good. And he likes riding it because it is so low to the ground it corners like a mutha.
