Electric cars

I see starting in 2018 in Wisconsin fully electric cars will pay a yearly $100 fee and Hybrids will in the near future, revenue lost from Gas tax is the reason as that tax is used to repair and build all roads, I can see this going up often as more folks choose EV's.

Most major cities offer prime parking for EV,s in downtown locations along with free charging.

thats a great perk

For now... once the driver is hooked and reeled in then they get to start paying through the nose.

Really?

Really... you think free charging of your electric car is going to last forever. You think you're not going to be paying for building and maintaining the roads your electric car drives on.  Think about how long it takes to fill up a gas tank on a car versus how long it takes to recharge an electric car. Even when the times get shorter it will still be a lot longer than topping up a tank. Picture the now commercial for profit charging stations that will cover the same amount of ground as a football field to accommodate the charging needs as the number of electric cars grows. That enormous piece of real estate doesn't come for free. Then the overhead of operating it. Think about all the upgraded electrical infrastructure that would be needed to feed a charging station for perhaps a hundred cars at a time. The turnover of those charging connections won't be one every 3 or 4 minutes like a gas pump.

None of this is free.

good when the primary funding for roads is fuel taxes and we push for increased mpg and now subsidize EV did anyone in the government not understand how that was going to destroy the infrastructure funding model.

Simple solution.  Just create another agency to investigate what happened, then earmark several hundred billion to continue subsidies for all the special interest folks and cause a basic Chevy Impala to cost over 75 grand if there were no subsidies at all

That's going away. I'm seeing credit card readers on a lot of them.

“Football field sized charging stations”

What is so hard for you to understand about that. Today it takes under 5 minutes to fill a gas tank and pay for it. Then the next car comes up. It's a concept called turn over rate.

Time to charge an electric car can take as little as 30 minutes or up to 12 hours. The time it takes to charge depends on the size of the battery and the speed of the charging point. A typical electric car (Nissan LEAF 30kWh) takes 4 hours to charge from empty with a 7kW home charging point.

So now you have the first electric car pull up to one of what 6 charging stations, something like the number of pumps a good sized gas station will have. He's going to be there at least 30 minutes. Maybe he's going to go inside and get something to eat. Odds are he's not going to sit in his car for 30 minutes. Now all 6 charging stations are in use for 30+ minutes. You think there won't be any more than 6 cars needing a recharge every 30 minutes and it will turn over smoothly. The seventh car arriving is going to be looking for a charging station. And the 8th and the 9th and so on. Before you know it in order to provide timely service to the customer you have that football field sized lot full of charging stations.

Don't forget 30 minutes is a best case scenario...

I would think business would install charging stations.....if customers will have to wait a half hour the red lobster might want to invest in free charging....win win

You're on your way to the cottage where gas stations are few and far between today.... what now for charging stations.

We always stop halfway for lunch or dinner.

PS gas stations are plentiful and most are 24/7

I had to pay for air last week.  :nea:

Left the vehicle out in the cold all week.  Figured I might as well get tires up to pressure for the drive back home with the sled loaded.  I finally gave up looking for free air after the third station.
