Rand Paul to vote to block emergency declaration, forcing Trump veto

Recommended Posts

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) disclosed on Saturday that he will vote in support of a resolution this month to block President Trump's emergency declaration, reports the Bowling Green Daily News.

"I can’t vote to give the president the power to spend money that hasn’t been appropriated by Congress. We may want more money for border security, but Congress didn’t authorize it. If we take away those checks and balances, it’s a dangerous thing."

Why it matters: Paul's vote, along with the votes of Republican Sens. Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski and Thom Tillis, gives the Senate the majority necessary to block Trump's national emergency. Trump has already vowed to veto the resolution if it passes, which will be the first veto of his presidency.

Rand Paul supports the wall. He doesn’t support the national emergency because it allows the president to spend money that wasn’t appropriated by Congress.

No shit. And he doesn’t support making this a weapon that weakens the Constitutional power of Congress and thus decreases the balance of power in government. I can’t wait for the supporters of this to whine and complain when the next dem President does it. They will do this.

Do you have any regard for the Constitution or the principles of our govt ? Or do you think the president should be given powers of the king to do as he pleases? Or just the presidents you like?

Yeah and when one of those AOC progressives become president and declare a national emergency on climate change or racism you can refer to the same act.

I wonder, what will be their resolution?  Pretty sure both of those have already been "declared" with failed resolutions.  This is a false dichotomy.  There are things they can/will try but....probably not gonna work out.  Working to secure borders will garner American support.  Working to avoid securing borders will draw Republican votes (American support).

This will be a Veto that will send TDS into levels of EXCELLENCE!

The Constitution is what gives a president that right.

/thread.   As if the Democrats wouldn’t and haven’t hesitated using every tactic in their arsenal to win power and push their agenda.   I like and respect rand Paul, but this won’t accomplish anything except position him in a manner that will get more moderate support.

Let’s just save these two posts for reference later.

No, the National Emergencies Act of 1976 is what gives the President that right. An inherently flawed bill. It was not designed to be used because someone didn’t get their way and Congress said no. Every other President has recognized that fact and not used it to push an agenda.
