China retaliates, slaps duties on U.S. soybeans, planes; markets skid

U.S.-made goods that appear to face added tariffs in China based, on an analysis of Beijing’s list, include Tesla electric cars, Ford’s Lincoln auto models, Gulfstream jets made by General Dynamics and Brown-Forman Corp’s Jack Daniel’s whiskey.

Unlike Washington’s list, which was filled with many obscure industrial items, China’s list strikes at signature U.S. exports, including soybeans, frozen beef, cotton and other key agricultural commodities produced in states from Iowa to Texas that voted for Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election.

While Washington targeted products that benefit from Chinese industrial policy, including its “Made in China 2025” initiative to replace advanced technology imports with domestic products in strategic industries such as advanced IT and robotics, Beijing’s appears aimed at inflicting political damage.

Tobacco and whiskey, for example, are both on Beijing’s list and are produced in states including Kentucky, home of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Dow futures currently down 508 points. This could not come at a worse time for the markets, still digesting the initial volley in the trade war. Elections, policies, tweets all have real world consequences.

this fucking clown is at least 5X worse than I imagined him to be and he STILL has support from a bunch of dumb fucks

I've been reading cases where a bunch of those who voted for him are either suffering (like health insurance changes) or soon will be as a result of this nitwit's rww fantasy policies. I say good, sleep in the bed they help make. maybe next time they'll wise up and finally realize what the GOP is all about.

"still better than Hillary"  :lmao:

why isn't trump doing anything in regards to clothing and textiles coming out of china? :news:

Forgetting the small details for a moment and looking at the big picture, in your opinion:

1) Is a large and growing trade deficit with any country a bad thing for the US?

2) If it is bad, how would YOU address it? and,

3) Should US intellectual property be protected offshore the same as its protected within our borders?

1) Absolutely.

2) Certainly not running off my mouth and starting a trade war.  I would do a bit more research into what industries are seeing such horrible imbalance, assess what

3) To the point that we can reach international agreements on it, yes.

So we agree China needs to be addressed.  And we agree Trump's surface tactics aren't our first choice.  Lets just hope some folks behind the scenes (Wilbur Ross, etc) are doing the heavy lifting that will eventually put the US in a better net position.  :bc:

I think they will come to the table and try to get an agreement. Nobody wants a trade war. But these are really tough things to deal with, and have been festering for a long time. I’m going to give it some time and see where this goes.

Some guys would hate Trump if he personally cured their kids Cancer.   Neal's bitter because he's a farmer and reacting to short term news on tariffs.

Meh, that's a small part.  Seeing Trump torpedo a successful business from his Presidential bully pulpit because it's CEO owns a paper that's critical of him is far more troubling to me.  That's disgusting, unethical, and borders on impeachable IMO.
