Companies ready price hikes to offset Trump's global tariff plans

Source: washingtonpost

Across the United States, companies that rely on foreign suppliers are preparing to raise prices in response to the massive import tariffs that former president Donald Trump promises if he wins the election Tuesday.

Producers of a range of items, including clothing, footwear, baby products, auto parts and hardware, say they will pass along the cost of the tariffs to their American customers.

The planned price increases next year would come as consumers are beginning to enjoy relief from the highest inflation in four decades, and they directly contradict Trump’s repeated assurances that foreigners will pay the tariff tab.

“We’re set to raise prices,” Timothy Boyle, chief executive of Columbia Sportswear, said in an interview. “We’re buying stuff today for delivery next fall. So we’re just going to deal with it and we’ll just raise the prices. … It’s going to be very, very difficult to keep products affordable for Americans.”

Trump vows to impose the heaviest tariffs since the 1930s,

Well duh. To maintain their margins they need to increase prices. Isn’t that a no brainer?

Tariff will be passed on to the consumer.

Of course it will. Some think tariffs (taxes) happen in a vacuum, apparently.

The Biden administration has not reduced any of Trump’s tariffs on China, and in May 2024 raised tariffs on steel, aluminum, medical equipment, lithium-ion batteries, and solar cells.

Biden’s May 2024 tariff increases follow much of the same logic as Trump’s initial 2018 tariffs, albeit without mention of the U.S. trade deficit with China. In its release, the administration argued that “American workers continue to face unfair competition from China’s non-market overcapacity in steel and aluminum” and “encourage[d] China to eliminate its unfair trade practices.” The Biden administration, like the Trump administration, sees tariffs on China as both a punitive measure that might spur a change in Chinese industrial policy as well a way to protect domestic manufacturers.

There’s some downstream effects of these tariffs. One way to fight the drug cartels and illegal immigration is for people in Mexico to have more opportunities for a livelihood. That comes through building industry and the country to start making things. These tariffs will have the opposite effect. So be prepared for more of the same. It’s very short sighted.

It's a price increase without profit...tariff goes to the government so perhaps a tax influence, but the consumer gets fucked and pays for it.

Why would a democrat reduce or eliminate a tax?
