Voting day is a national holiday in lots of countries, I think they have the right idea. Keep it on a Tuesday, so it doesn't turn into a long weekend for vacations like Memorial Day or Labor Day. I would think we would get a higher proportion of people to show up and vote, which would be good. 

 

Maybe you don't get paid for the day unless you show up to work the next day with one of those 'I voted' stickers???

If it was a holiday can you imagine how many would blow off monday and take a 4 day weekend
