New Nuke plant shutdown for repairs

Brand new and has yet to produce commercial power and it’s already needing repairs due to deteriorating components. Lol.  Those consumers that signed on for this already have huge rate increases to cover this non producing power plant.  Just wait till they have to start paying for the power that comes from it.  😂

The unit of Atlanta-based Southern Co. said the problem was a degraded seal. The reactor has been shut down while repairs are made.

The reactor has already hit full power output as part of its testing, which Georgia Power said Friday was 95% complete. But the utility said commercial operation could be put off again if other problems develop.

Vogtle, which is seven years behind schedule, has seen the cost that its owners will pay double to more than $31 billion. That doesn’t include $3.7 billion that original contractor Westinghouse paid to the owners after going bankrupt, which brings total spending to almost $35 billion.

Did you hear about the solar panel field that got completely destroyed by a hail storm.

Is that the one that leaked radiation so than anyone living in a 30 mile radius had to leave….forever?

How much did you pay for your solar system?

The Yankee plant in Vermont supplied 70% of Vermonts needs for 42 years before being decommissioned....one plant 70% of vermont.

Only 650k in Vermont though.

Well they could have put up a 24k acres solar farm.

Plus that was an older sma plant.

Vermont is not known or ever known for cheap electricity compared to other states.

georgian are going to feel the pain in their pocketbooks of new nuke power.

WAYNESBORO, Ga. - Now that the third reactor at Plant Vogtle in Burke County has reached full capacity, the Georgia Public Service Commission will decide who will pay for the increase in costs for the project.

It’s estimated Georgia Power customers could have to pay anywhere from nine to 14% more on their bill if the Georgia Public Service Commission approves Georgia Power’s request for customers to pay more for the project. That would cost the average household $400 more a year.

One of the technicians at TMI volunteered to go down in the containment building to get a sample of cooling water from the reactor after the accident occurred.
What he drew off was a beaker of liquid that was yellowish green in color and the beaker vibrated in his hands. Giving off over 10,000 rems. If he kept holding it he would have been dead in 15 minutes.
Very brave soul.

I remember this accident well when I was in middle school

Maybe it’s changed, but nuclear power was the most expensive type of power generation by a good margin. Couple that with exorbitant cost of finding storage and storing the waste.

If we stuck more resources into development of nuclear we could be using old spent fuel for generation in new nuke plants.I know they have ability to do this but not sure any plants are in development to do this?we need plants that can easily ramp up and down depending on demand.

i was talking to a guy from south Dakota when on the europe cruise that sells wind mill parts. as he put it they dont work without a big subsidy. he says i make a lot of money selling parts but i hate them. every 5 to 7 years if they were well maintained you rebuilt the gear box the parts are 150k. one bearing was 50k
