L’ANSE, Mich. (WZMQ) – A man who was pumping gas is dead after the driver of a semi crashed into a gas station and caused a fire in L’Anse late Thursday night, according to Michigan State Police.

The driver of the semi – a 22-year-old man from Illinois – was arrested for operating while intoxicated causing death, investigators said.

It was reported at the Holiday gas station on U.S.-41 in L’Anse Michigan around 11 p.m.

The semi and trailer hit the gas pumps, injuring a 43-year-old Baraga man who was fueling a vehicle at the time, according to State Police. The victim, who has not been named, was taken to Baraga County Memorial Hospital where he later died.

A Holiday employee was also taken to the same hospital for treatment of injuries. A store customer and trainee who was a passenger in the semi were not hurt.

The crash caused the gas station and surrounding vehicles to catch fire.

Troopers said the scene is still active as of Friday morning, and State Police are investigating.

Was he really drunk ? If a comercial driver has a beer he is prob going to blow dirty . If he smoked a joint a week ago he is testing dirty .

Technically yes oui but reality ? Don't know no numbers up .

One of the reasons I just pay the extra$$$  for tabs every yr and don't register any of my trucks as comercial

And it is a substantial savings in MN to go comercial like 700 a yr savings for the first yr ir so . And 400ish hundred for the next few then it evens out for about 3 yrs . Then you save like 80 bucks a yr not being comercial until the tucks goes to junk yard if it ever makes the 10  yr mark

I stand correected.

It’s still ridiculously low and it’s the only reason I don’t have a cdl right now. They can pop you in your car on a Saturday night leaving dinner after 2 beers and might ruin your career over it. Just disgusting.

So even in your personal vehicle you have the .04 limit?

Father of 6 girls…..damn.

L’ANSE, Mich. (WJMN) – One man has died, and another person was hospitalized after a semi-truck veered off of US-41 and crashed into the gas pumps of the Holiday Gas Station, killing one man then crashed into the gas station itself just after 11:00 p.m. Thursday night. The crash caused a major fire that consumed the entire property. Troopers from the Calumet Post were dispatched to the scene according to Sgt. Gary Salwey.

“Our troopers on scene began further investigation and discovered a tractor trailer had ran off the road up into the Holiday Gas Station parking lot, struck a vehicle that was pumping gas, continued further colliding into the Holiday Gas Station,” said Sgt. Salwey.

The victim, identified by Lake Superior Performance Rally officials as 43-year-old Al Dantes Jr. of L’Anse was transported to Baraga County Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. A father of 6 girls, Dantes was a member of the L’Anse Area School Board and was running for a seat on the Baraga County Commission. Dantes was set to compete in the Lake Superior Performance Rally Championship Series where he was leading his class in points. Former teammates and fellow racers all said Dantes was not only a good friend and a great competitor, but he was always the first to come to the assistance of anyone in need.

Santiago Iglesias knew him well.

“He was there in his truck in front of us,” said Iglesias. “Full of people helping some new team out, showing them the ropes and we’re just laughing and a joking around. That was less than 24 hours ago. Big ol’ smile on his face like he always had.”

Fellow driver Robert Kassel rode with Dantes in past races.

“Larger than life,” said Kassel. “He was this immense character and everybody knows Al. No one has a negative story about him. Like, there’s always a memory, there’s really no one like him, his presence on media, his presence just at rallies, and he’s always having a good time.”

A Holiday employee was also transported to the hospital for injuries sustained from the crash. A Holiday store patron, as well as a trainee who was a passenger in the semi-truck at the time of the crash were not injured.

The driver of the semi-truck, a 22-year-old Illinois man, is lodged in the Baraga County Jail for Operating While Intoxicated, causing death and expected to be arraigned on Monday.

The crash shut down portions of US-41 well into the morning hours. Michigan State Police are continuing to investigate.

BAC follows the vehicle you are operating in MN.

CDL holder operating commercially = .04.

CDL holder operating private vehicle = .08.

You will still probably loose your CDL if you get popped in your personal vehicle.  A second time getting picked up means you'll probably loose it forever.

He was drunk as shit. I knew the guy that got killed. The prosecutor has a camp down the road from me. The negro was driving from Chicago in a 80,000lbs over the road truck.  He posted 10k of the 100,000k bond Monday morning. Looks like he will be getting 15 years. The only good thing is it was a big corporate national fleet truck with lots of insurance. The family will never be broke. Won’t replace Dad but they won’t have to worry about money. A real fucked up deal.
