But Texas windmills are the future!!!!

How's solar working out during this heatwave? Shouldn't it be working great during this time? :news:

Texas grid operator urges electricity conservation as heat wave drives up demand.

Those fossil fuels are the ticket….  Not!!!

ERCOT said Wednesday’s alert was partially due to an unexpected number of outages in thermal generation, which is coal and gas.

Higher then expected power plant outages from coal and natural gas today in texas.

The call for conservation came because of higher-than-expected outages at coal and natural gas-fired power plants, as well as low winds, as demand continues to rise because of higher-than-normal temperatures.

Low winds also made it harder for the grid to keep up with demand during hotter-than-usual July temperatures. Projections showed wind generation coming in at less than 10% of its capacity on Monday, ERCOT said. In the spring, ERCOT forecast that an extremely low wind generation day for the summer would be around 1% of its capacity; a low wind generation day for the summer would be around 11% of its capacity; a normal wind generation day for the summer would be around 36% of its capacity.

Winds in Texas often drop during the daytime and pick up overnight, especially in the summer. ERCOT forecasts more wind power will be available to the grid on Tuesday.

Power grids must keep supply and demand in balance at all times. When Texas’ grid falls below its safety margin of excess supply, the grid operator starts taking additional precautions to avoid blackouts.

The first precaution is to ask the public to voluntarily cut back electricity usage. The next step is for the grid operator to tell the public the grid could be in serious condition, and Texans need to cut back electricity usage in order to help the grid. If the grid’s conditions still don’t improve, ERCOT would then implement controlled, rotating power outages, in which Texans in some areas could lose power for up to 45 minutes at a time.

Hmmm, and record cold the winter before. No doubt about it, it's "GLOBAL WARMING!!!

Texas is feeling its coldest air mass in decades, and it's breaking record cold temperatures left and right.

Texas has probably the most advanced energy program in the US. Their main Achilles heal is that they stand alone, independent from the east and west grid. They don’t borrow from the national power grids.

Their whole grid isn’t hardened for climate extremes for that area.  During what would be minor cold in the rest of the US almost all of the thermal generation tripped off In Texas.  During extreme heat their fossil fuel thermal generation is tripping off at unexpected higher rates.

their is like 4 or 5 island grids in the US and all but one is regulated by the government…. ERCOT is all run by private billionaire companies with no oversite.  It’s why the Texas grid has and is failing miserably

I wonder what the issue was in 1889?

"The state just saw its hottest December on record since 1889"

Solar sounds wonderful too.

Solar power, which has performed well this summer, was also struggling Wednesday to produce as much electricity as expected, ERCOT said, because of some dark clouds over solar farms in West Texas.

Yep when clouds come over solar output is reduced.  When temp extremes happen the fossil fuel output in texas is reduced.

Wow. Have to go back over 100 years to find a weather anomaly that is now occurring every year.

Texas what a fucked up state.

Until it turns blue then it magically gets praise from you. Funny how that works eh

Correct and their elected officials aren't getting it squared away.

What I hear when they say we need more power because on low wind days we’re only getting 10% of what we need isn’t “get rid of windmills”, but rather “build more windmills”.  Simply build 10x as many windmills as there are currently and then you’ve got 100% of the current potential kWh even on those low wind days and the fuel is still free.
