Washington (CNN)Sen. Bernie Sanders offered a partial defense of Fidel Castro's Cuban revolution, asserting that "It's unfair to simply say everything is bad" with the way the late despot ruled the country.

"We're very opposed to the authoritarian nature of Cuba but you know, it's unfair to simply say everything is bad. You know?" Sanders said on CBS' "60 Minutes" in an interview that aired Sunday. "When Fidel Castro came into office, you know what he did? He had a massive literacy program. Is that a bad thing? Even though Fidel Castro did it?"
The comments -- which could prove to alienate some moderate Democrats as Sanders' chases the party's primary nomination -- came in response to a question about remarks Sanders had made in the 1980s assessing that the Cuban people didn't rise up against Castro because of education and healthcare.
When host Anderson Cooper pointed to the notable number of dissidents imprisoned in Cuba, Sanders responded, "That's right. And we condemn that."
"Unlike Donald Trump, let's be clear, you want to-- I do not think that Kim Jong Un is a good friend," he said. "I don't trade love letters with a murdering dictator. Vladimir Putin, not a great friend of mine."
Castro, who died in 2016, drew scores of admirers and detractors as he clung to a socialist economic model and one-party Communist rule, even after the Soviet Union disintegrated.
Sanders' comments drew push back online Sunday night, including from Democratic Rep. Donna Shalala of Florida who tweeted, "I'm hoping that in the future, Senator Sanders will take time to speak to some of my constituents before he decides to sing the praises of a murderous tyrant like Fidel Castro."
Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio also rebuked Sanders' remarks, stating, "he's wrong about why people didn't overthrow Castro. It's not because 'he educated their kids, gave them health care' it's because his opponents were jailed, murdered or exiled."
Sanders, a self-described Democratic socialist, has solidified his status as the front-runner vying for the Democratic presidential nomination after claiming victory in the Nevada caucuses on Saturday.

It’s not all bad. Great place to vacation. Very safe. The people are poor as fuck. Capitalism and zero embargo’s would help them but there’s just so many people on an asset poor Caribbean island they’ll always be on the poorer side

The Cuba/Soviet Union stuff is enough to sink  him in the general election but does he really have a plan to pay for those programs which sound great in theory but in reality may not be sustainable? 2.6 million early childhood educators that would receive free schooling and student loan forgiveness...I’m all for spending money here and not on overseas fuckery but is any of this realistic?

compared to the rest of the carribbean they aren't poor. when you factor in education, literacy rates, and access to healthcare they probably live better than most others.

Wasn't Michael Moores claim that Cuban health Care is tip tops proven blatantly false?

Cuba has more doctors per capita than most other counties. They also have a fairly healthy healthcare tourism business.

Obama’s normalizing relations with Cuba was probably his greatest and most right headed accomplishment.

Of course the orange fucking retardation stormed in and undid it and his base of mindless meat sacks cheered

Most of them are crazy poor and Cuba is broke. The ones who work in tourism definitely do better. But they’re taken care of for sure

Fidel was an entitled brat who used his dads estate fortune to convince poor farmers to help him take over the country so he could have it all for himself

I don't think there was anything wrong with normalizing relations with Cuba.   Yeah they let Russia put nukes there 57(?) years ago but the Chinese were fucking killing our soldiers in Korea not long before that.

Whatever become of all our diplomats getting sick there?   Was that around the time Trump reversed some of the Obama changes?

They are going to link every country we have embargoes and sanctions on to Bernie. They wont link Bernie to Canada, Or England or Germany, or Switzerland or the other 1st world countries that have national health care and decent minimum wage laws. Might not need to tho, if coronavirus pops the market bubble Cuba might start looking pretty nice.

Then you dont understand why we have embargoes on Cuba. Its not because of a ruthless dictator, clearly we dont have issues with them unless they are sitting on something somebody wants. .

Embargo's or sanctions for govt's treating its people poorly are acceptable.   Castro was not good to the people of Cuba.   My point is neither is China so we shouldn't treat Cuba any differently.
