If 20 are all pointing hard left splitting 60% of the party and one is shooting down the middle after the other less vocal 40%, who is going to win that? Seems pretty evident to me. Defining “center” as the country sees it and how you see it would be a mistake though. Country just isn’t at your level yet with political understanding. Top-level civil servants are managing day-to-day work of the agencies. Isolated in the White House, distrustful of aides, at odds with intelligence agencies, distant from his cabinet heads, Trump has no system to make or implement decisions. Since then, he’s pursued Hispanic and black voters more aggressively than any Republican since Reagan, and it isn’t even close. The further left the Democrats push next year — and it looks like they’ll push very hard, indeed — the more secure the GOP base will become, aside from a very few remaining NeverTrump dead-enders. That would give Trump the liberty to spend more time and resources pursing voters which the Democrat nominee simply can’t afford to lose. 2020 is shaping up to be a fun, scrappy fight.
