more snow

thursday december 20

Thursday, Dec. 19 the south end and inland areas of the North Shore received more snow! Inland lakes are freezing up which means snowmobile trails will start opening after another good dump of snow.

You can cross-country ski midway up the shore, in the Tofte Lutsen area, near Grand Marais and up the Gunflint Trail.

Snowshoeing is wide open on public property and you will find snow inland behind the ridge.

Lutsen Mountains is open.

Photo is from the last snowfall just up the hill from Lake Superior.

8″ Snow Base

31 degrees, snowy granules are coming down, skied 2>1>13>21>20>16>17>3>. Good day for waxless skis but I did fine with red wax. There is a good solid 8-inch base. Trails were nearly complete with setting tracks yesterday until the groomer overheated due to the cooling fan breaking. Hence finishing one side of the double-tracked section and trail sections 1 to 2 to 3 were not able to be tracked. We need more snow in some of the bogs to fill in the dips. The remainder of the trails are in excellent shape for this early-season ski opportunity. Be sure to check out our revised trail map as segments and the trailhead location have changed due to bridges being out of commission due to the mega-storm event.
Note: New trailhead at Jensen and Hwy 1 (Flathorn trailhead closed indefinitely due to last summer’s major rain event that washed away 3 of our 4 critical bridges.).

Comments: Over 90% of the trail system is groomed with a classic track and skate deck. Less rocky/rugged trails such as Logging Camp, Deer Mouse, Red Pines, Summer Home, Campground Loop, etc. are phenomenal right now – no issues using your good skies. For the majority of the rest of the trails we recommend B-skis as there are a couple of short sections on some of these loops where some dirt is still present from the groomer cleats, i.e., Moose Ridge, Cross Fox, Ridge Run, Upper Beaver Dam.

West end logging camp is, as many know, a very rocky trail. Some rocks are still poking through on that section so we’d recommend rock skies if you decide to go around the west end of Flour Lake. We groomed it again yesterday and while it turned out pretty darn good in most places, there are just enough spots where the rogue rock pokes through that we can’t comfortably say, “for sure, take your good skies on it.” Lake crossings are not open yet so feel free to drive between Golden Eagle and Bearskin if you only have good skies with you. As soon as the ice is thick enough to cross with snowmobiles, we will get North-South Link connected.

We have some warmish weather today and tomorrow, but nothing too bad. Highs around 33-34 degrees. This time of year, with the short days and cloudy skies, we aren’t too worried about it causing any significant damage to the trail base. Chances of snow start again Wednesday evening through Thursday night.

Grooming frequently occurs between the release of new trail reports. For the most up to date grooming information, as well specific trail conditions, please contact Golden Eagle Lodge (218-388-2203) or Bearskin Lodge (218-388-2292). Central Gunflint Ski Pass Required.

Saturday and Sunday (12/15 & 12/16/2024) we cleared and packed (many times) the 1st 10k of the trail. We have at least a foot and 1/2 of snow and are waiting the serious freeze this week to settle our packed base.

We cleared other sections, from the West End in several miles and other sections in the middle but are seriously hampered by many many downed good size trees.

Not sure if whole trail can be fully open this year

We are focusing in on doing what we can well. The majority of use is in & out from East End. The other is in & out from West End. Total system skiing is limited so with the many trees down, we have to prioritize around the heavy usage. We’ll keep at it and keep you posted.

Skinny Ski posts when we can groom. Right now it you could ski in 10k for the East but no tracks and we still have lots of alder stubble to clear out.

We need snow to groom and are waiting the forecast but nothing real soon emerging.

Funny how the Alaskan warm up doesn't get any mention by the angry Eskimo

Lets slow the roll a bit!

I'm still trying to finger out how my ancestors cleared the land of glaciers to start farming it back in the 1850's.

Settled science told me it used to be covered in glaciers, so surely my ancestors cleared those right on out of here.

Minnesota clubs are bunch of Karens and they don’t want anyone riding the trails ever. They can get 10 feet of snow and they would still be closed. When we get snow here the clubs say have at it, take a chain saw and a canoe, we aren’t coming to help your dumb ass if you sink. Or they post he go ride down this trail to pack it in because the groomer is heavy to take through there

It’s all the cows they had. Their farts caused the planet to warm and kill the glaciers. Just ask waltz

That's how all the clubs are in MN that I'm familiar with.  I've never seen a closed MN snowmobile trail.  I know WI closes gates on trails for poor conditions but that's not how MN works.

Yep - for MN it's open Dec 1 - Mar 31 for Grant In Aid trails.  That doesn't mean land owners can't keep their gates closed, or close them if they see the need (low snow) which are a bigger part of the trail system - down here anyway.  I honestly like how WI does it, with closing trails at their discretion.

NY trails open at sunset on the last day of hunting season, and stay open as long there is 6" of snow (it's up to the individual clubs to make that determination)

Another week till the trails can legally open for most of the state

December warmer than normal despite blankets of snow

snow accumulates at a nature center

Snow accumulates at Hartley Nature Center on Thursday in Duluth.

Despite the look of a winter wonderland for much of the state, temperatures for December have actually been higher than than previous years. Friday and Saturday are going to be colder than average, but that’s outside the norm of the growing trend.

“Ten of the last 11 days of the month are forecasted to be well above normal. So we're going to finish with another warm December,” said meteorologist and climatologist Mark Seeley.

Although the weather might feel wintry, December temperatures in the state have actually increased by nearly 5 degrees Fahrenheit since 2010. Additionally, Minnesota has only had two previous December months that were below average in temperature since then.

Oh no!  You’re still losing the bet dipfuck. When are your below average temps and above average snowfall numbers going to kick in retard?

Explain why this is happening? @mnstang, @Bontz, @krom, You dumbasses said climate change is fake. How the fuck is Minnesota going to lose what little snowpack it has in December and January? Why is that? You said over and over that climate change is fake. :lol2::owned:
